State, local governments agree on Haw River Trail

GREENSBORO, N.C. | The state and nine local governments have reached a formal agreement to put a hiking and paddle trail across five counties in the Triad area.

The deal marks a major milestone for the Haw River Trail, which is still years away from completion.

The project would serve hikers, campers, boaters and paddlers from the Haw River State Park that's being created on the Guilford-Rockingham county line to the river's terminus in Chatham County.

The agreement between state government and Guilford, Alamance, Rockingham, Orange and Chatham counties says they will work to create a 1,000-foot-wide "trail corridor" from the new Haw River State Park to the Jordan Lake State Recreation Area in Chatham County.

Supporters plan to hold a ribbon-cutting Friday on the river to celebrate the Triad agreement.

State officials recently adopted the trail as part of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. While the cross-state trail is well developed in western North Carolina, it remains in the formative stages across the Piedmont.

I have friends and family that own property along the Haw - I have not actually even heard of this. My concern is the development of a trail, wouldnt this cause problems for the wildlife in the river?
Not to mention the people who live along the river having construction issues?
This seems a bit strange.
