I was concerned you would take offense to my post Stargazer...and please know I did not mean it as a putdown with different artists and their personal preferences...what I AM TRYING TO UNDERSTAND is why have questionable art on the main street of a small town when the best situation would be to work together....all businesses...to bring in the public to the area in question. Why cause more division in an already very divided community. Why not work together with mutual understanding and shared goals of downtown revitalization not isolation? Just askin' .....as for being shocked by any art...not me I have a varied appreciation for many styles of the arts and the artists both modern and classic. Mamacash, I respect you (and usually agree with you), but I must digress on this issue. I think the incubator and new galleries have been nothing but good for downtown Siler City. Not long ago it was dying. Now it has energy and is actually drawing visitors. We now have an outdoor stage, benches, people, and unique things to buy! Instead of trying to drive these people out, I think we should welcome more! They have only added to the town. I am sorry this thread has gotten off to a bad start...my simple question is can the folks who have downtown businesses work together or are they working together to revitalize downtown....I personally have nothing against the Art Incubator and they efforts to effect change to downtown Siler City....I am sure that it can be done and there has been improvement since their arrival BUT this is at least two threads started here on this board about the same issue quoting the same article and now a response...and I am just asking the question. I am trying to understand not attack and if my posts came off as attacks then I apologize for any misunderstanding I caused. And I will not ask anymore questions.

I am personally interested in the theater there, the plays. for years I have had Playmaker's seats. the theater could draw people like me, who are frankly looking for a night out at a lower price.
embrace it, people!
how many people know you have a good drama sector?

Mamacash, I don't think anyone is opposed to questions (though I'm certainly no authority), I just think the artists are trying hard to improve the city and don't blame them for feeling unappreciated. I suggest everyone and anyone attend the next artwalk on March 20th and decide for themselves. Really, it is so nice to see Siler so alive!
Belle, the outdoor stage is mainly music I think. But just that is a real improvement!

Thank you for some clarity Stargazer...I enjoy dabbling in watercolors, acrylics and oils and really enjoy seeing others work...because mine is for my eyes only...just to play around and teach my grandchildren to dabble and enjoy creating.

The original post cites an article that is five months old. Why is that? Surely there are more current and positive happenings in Siler City.

Why is that? Because I just found it. Those who have been on this board long enough know that I post items I find about Chatham County on the web here. It is not uncommon for those who have issues with the points made in such posts to question why I posted them here.

My point is that we are deluged with BBS postings and video clips on current and/or positive events in the Pittsboro area, yet rarely do we see likewise in other areas of the county. As Randy would say, "just sayin'!"

Folks from all over the county are welcome to post information here.
I appreciate the fact that the mayor of Pittsboro opts to post information here and I would also be grateful for the mayor of Siler City to do the same.

Mamma cash has a good point about the "tastefulness" of art and being part of a community.
A few points: 1) I don't consider it the right of an artist to try to shock me/make me think/change my life/ whatever in the public square. Fine if I go to their gallery, of my own choice, and am moved or changed. But I'm not sure that that is the point, or should be the point, of public art.
This goes back to the community thing. Apparently some "artists" find the sight of shipping crates and car parts offensive...and so they raise a stink about it. But when citizens find the publicly displayed art offensive, they hide behind either the "you're too much of a hayseed to understand it" or "it's art, get over it" phrases.
Does anyone but me see the hypocrisy here?
As part of the community, I believe it is the responsibility of all of the resident businesses to present their best face. Yes, artists have the right to display their work...I'm not for censorship, but as part of a larger community, they should consider the whole community in deciding what to display publicly...just as the repair shop should consider how they display their car parts and how Clapp Brothers displays their machines....
It's about thoughtfulness and personal responsibility to those around you.
Respectfully, CR

Good to hear, Randy.
I just wanted to add that in New York City, they have EXTREMELY swanky art galleries right next to 50 year old car washes and repair garages.
I don't think it needs to be either/or. I personally love places that are a mix of different influences and activities. Clapp Brothers and the Arts Incubator both define the word "character" for me.

Well, Snowcamper...we certainly agree on this one...it needs to be a joint effort to revitalize downtown anywhere, USA and incorporate the old with the new...thank you for a very insightful post.

Excellent point, snowcamper. I guess we all have our own definition of "eyesore."

I love to see old cars and parts laying around. To me they are not junk but potential projects. Personally art and music do not excite or do anything for me, the sight of a restored car, house or tractor is my kind of art.

The wife took me to get a hamburger at Johnson's today, waited in line but worth it, plus shared a booth with some folks from Greensboro and made some new friends, it rocked. We plan on meeting next month. Then went to the old store that was in the paper this week that's been around since the 1800's, bought some jeans and rubber boots, place had all kind of historical photographs throughout the store, but the best stuff was in the basement. Had a great time and spent money locally.
