In the two years since the church came to be, there's been a sense of wanting to be a blessing on the community, said Brian McCurry, pastor of ministry development. So they decided to leave the building, he said, playing on the reference to Elvis. The building isn't a church structure, but their regular meeting place at Perry Harrison School in Pittsboro.
After they gather at 8:30 a.m., some church members will stay there to do three service projects for the school. Others will spread out across the county to clean up the Haw River, work on two homeowner projects and clean up the local Habitat for Humanity's three buildings. At Harrison School, volunteers will do landscaping, repair and restain a fence, and pack cookies and care packages for teachers as a thank you for letting them use the school for Sunday services.
