By: Dr. Jeffrey Jones/UNC-GI am writing on behalf of Pittsboro Mayor Randy Voller, who has done a great
deal in his two terms and is capable of a great deal more if given another
opportunity. My name is Jeff Jones. I am a history professor at
UNC-Greensboro, and I have known Randy Voller for almost twenty years. I
grew up in nearby Liberty, NC, so I know a bit about small-town, North
Carolina politics. Randy’s vision of Pittsboro is that of a wonderful place
for people to live, and his actions to date have proven that. He has
secured grants for improvements in transportation and other areas to the
town’s daily life, proving that his leadership is a key ingredient for the
future of Pittsboro. Randy’s goal of containing sprawl and developing the
downtown is exactly the direction the town needs to go in—we do not need
another Cary. The beauty of his vision for the town is not surprising given
that Randy has a vested interest in Pittsboro’s future—he is not an
“absentee” developer, he lives here and has a thriving business in the
community.
Randy has been by far the most active mayor in Pittsboro for a long time,
and that is a good thing for the town and everyone in it. In this modern,
rapidly-changing world Pittsboro needs an active mayor, not just a
figurehead who cuts ribbons from time to time. Randy has shown himself to
be just the sort of mayor Pittsboro needs, and clearly he has earned a third
shot at the helm.
I knew Randy long before he became a local businessman and mayor. He is the
kind of guy one could always call on to help move or to lend you money, and
I know because I’ve done both. We’ve watched and played many basketball
games together over the years. Randy has also helped me buy a home, for
which I will be eternally grateful, and our families meet at the beach
together with other friends for a week every June. I can assure you that
Randy Voller is a man of the utmost integrity, honesty, and decency, a
rarity in modern politics. Randy is the kind of man who will help anyone
out when they need it, including lending a down-and-out mutual friend of
ours a car for an extended period of time and allowing a family displaced by
hurricane Katrina to live in his home. I have known Randy through many good
times, such as his marriage to my good friend Lesley Landis, who is a
remarkable woman in her own right. And I have know Randy through some bad
times, including the tragic death of his beloved infant daughter, an
experience that I as a father can hardly fathom having to go through. The
voters of Pittsboro are in a prime position to elect a wonderful person,
Randy Voller, as their mayor for a third term. Vote early and cast your
ballot for the incumbent mayor and we can all rest assured that Pittsboro
will be in good hands.
