Subject: Varsity Football Defeats Northeastern 28-6 in First Round 2AA Football Playoffs

Tra Chandler scored on a 66 yard reverse on the Chargers second drive and iced the game in the fourth quarter on a 92 yard touchdown run as the Varsity Football team defeated Elizabeth City Northeastern Friday night 28-6 here at Northwood High School to advance to the second round of the State 2AA Playoffs at conference rival South Granville Friday night at 7:30 at South Granville.

Ridge Smith got the Chargers started with a 49 yard reception over the middle that he took to the Eagles six yard line. On third and goal from the Chargers' one Shannon Peppers scored from 1 yard out to put the Chargers up 7-0 after Josue Pena's PAT. After a defensive stand by the Chargers, Tra Chandler took a reverse handoff from Shannon Peppers and zigzagged down the field 66 yards for the touchdown to put the Chargers up 14-0 after Josue Pena's second PAT. The Chargers closed out their 21-0 first quarter rampage after a 16 yard catch by Austin Mathews and a 7 yard run by Shannon Peppers with a third touchdown when Senior Quarterback Sam Griffin connected with Ridge Smith for a 42 yard touchdown pass in which Smith scored after tiptoeing along the sideline into the end zone.

After the Eagles scored early in the third to cut the lead to 21-6, and were at the Chargers' 7 with a chance to cut further into the Chargers' lead, Brandon Saurine recovered a fumble at the Chargers' 7, which was followed on the next play by Chandler again racing untouched 92 yards to paydirt to seal the first round win for the Chargers. Josue Pena was 4 for 4 on PATs on the night.

Defensively, Shannon Peppers, Jamal Baines, Austin Mathews, Paul Shackelford, and Terrance Gordon all had sacks for the Chargers. Donyea Rhodes, Jamal Baines, Brandon Saurine, Shannon Peppers, Ryan Seymour, and Terrance Gordon all had tackles for losses for the Chargers. Gordon had three tackles for losses on the night.

Again, the Chargers play at South Granville Friday night at 7:30.
