Here's a weird one for ya......

Our neighborhood used to be over run with feral kitties.  a few years ago, Neighbor Vet and another neighbor trapped, fixed and released bunches of 'em.

Every now and again I see one waltzing thru our yard.  Another neighbor feeds 'em.

A few weeks ago a particularly skittish black cat aka Basement Kitteh (see lolcatz.com)  walked up our back porch steps, sniffed around and casually walked back down.  Within a few minutes a cute little gray, white and orange kitty came up.  So you all know me by now.  I started feeding her.  She has been fixed as indicated by her clipped left ear.

I named her Kitteh Kitteh.  At first she kept her distance but has slowly allowed me to pat her head a bit but not pick her up yet.  She has a bowl of water and food on the back porch along with a comfy box with a pillow.  She spends most nights there now.

When the motion sensor light comes on I go out and chat with Kitteh Kitteh.  She "mows" a bit and eats and gets more secure with me every day.

A couple of nights ago the light came on and I opened the door.  There eating the food was a small possum.  We were both startled and I shooed it away.  Kitteh was sitting there on the top of the steps and watched Possum waddle off and looked at me as if I had hurt her feelings.  Kitteh went down the steps following Possum - but not in a predatory way.

I thought I had completely hallucinated the whole thing.  Until the next night when I opened the door to find possum again eating and this time Kitteh was watching from her box.  Again I startled Possum and it waddled down the stairs.  Kitteh followed but returned later to crawl in her box for the night.

I know I am crazy in very many ways but what do y'all think about this?  Are Kitteh Kitteh and Possum friends?

Doubtful friends, (unless you find both of them piled up in the box together Cheesy). Otherwise, both just hungry. My current "lion" is a left clipped ear keeter! He is GRAND! He is so thankful for a good home now, despite having to go to the vet yesterday for his annual check-up (and the dreaded temperature check!) and the must have vaccinations! He has just become an absolute jewel pet! He appeared as my 18 yr. old cat was on her death bed. He respectfully sat on the sidelines as I buried her and then consoled me!

no way. they both like the food dish.

Kitteh Kitteh may still be confused who you are shooing away. Possum buddy will keep coming back as long as the dish is outside. try moving it inside, maybe Sunday when it warms up.

Yeah, I realize that about the possum.  But dang, it's just weird how Kitteh didn't seem to mind Possum hanging out and eating her food.

I have been slowly moving the food closer top the back door.......................

kitty doesn't know for sure it is her food. it is just food.

bring it inside. possum is wilder, will not (we hope) come inside. kitty maybe will get it figured out.

is it a young cat?

No doggie door, Miss Jane.  Petey would have wandered off.  And I have known of raccoons and possums using 'em too!  Yikes!

Good advice Belle.  I think she is 2-3 years old based on when the neighbors did the capture and release.  She is a small cat though.  Tried to post a pic but it didn't work. Will try again later.

Honey, if you are fixin' Possum Stew can we have Squirrel Brains on the side?
