There are 3 high schools and were 9 middle school/K-8 athletic programs in the county.  You are saying there is no support and lousy coaching in Chatham county.

Have you checked on how things are in all the schools or just assuming your experience in one school applies to all?  I have had a terrible experience with 2 coaches at 1 school, but I would never say that ALL of our coaches and schools have problems.

Just for the record.......Some of these comments are a bit off the wall. There are MANY, MANY good coaches in Chatham at the high schools and the middle schools. There are many more positive experiences than negative with teams and athletic programs. For those who actually know this it's a moot point. For those who want to make negative comments without fact, well the schools would love for you to come on down and volunteer your time and have a chance to see for yourselves. FACT: At both the Pollard boys/girls basketball tryouts there were three coaches on site to evaluate the talent. It was very thorough. Every child had equal opportunity. Some good players did not make the teams. Welcome to the real world of athletics, it is competitive. Athletics, the arts, clubs, anything extracurricular, have equal and positive value. Some parents and their child may have had a bad athletic experience somewhere along the line, I've had a bad experience with car repair shops, but I don't lump them all in the "negative" department. I've also learned through the years that my child's version of the events are not necessarily fact.

Well, in general I agree that spots can be good or in some cases may not be the best option. I don't agree, again with direct firsthand experience, that having the coach be a parent of one of the players is necessarily a bad thing. So the same "Don't ASSUME anything when it comes to sports at any level" applies to this situation as well, right? Same idea.

I also totally disagree with the whole mostly negative position, at least from my viewpoint. Sure, there are characters and personalities - but as a whole, getting some exercise, working with others and trying your best can all be valuable experiences. Being on a winning team, being on a losing team.

You are right in that sports may not be the best option for some kids, my own included. But I don't blame that on the coaches or the lack of 'perfection' in the Chatham County athletics or whatever. If your kid is good at a sport, chances are they are going to get to play. My oldest was not very good, but still got to play, still got lots of encouragement and was blessed to have many coaches giving their time to help out our kids. I don't really care that she got called for a foul she didn't commit or a travel or whatever, because after all that stuff doesn't really matter in the demand. Life goes on.
