It took the Chargers one overtime period and a blocked PAT to win their second round game tonight.....somewhere in Granville County........I went to the wrong school first......got to see the second half and boy was it worth the drive!

Way to Go CHARGERS!

And, on another note, the team from Duplin county was not able to win tonight, so we are HOME the day after Thanksgiving!   Third Round......oh my!!!!!!!!!!!

GO CHARGERS!

This was an amazing game. Northwood won in overtime by one point. This team had one their first encounter, so this was a real comeback for Northwood.

Granville lost their starting Quarterback due to him getting caught vandalizing a rival school.  Good lesson to young people, hopefully.  This cost his school and his family.

(I didn't go, but wife this was wife's high school and she has been going.)

THE REMATCH: Chargers, Vikings to meet in 2nd round of playoffs

from the Sanford Herald:   http://sanfordherald.com/pages/full_story/push?article-THE+REMATCH-+Chargers-+Vikings+to+meet+in+2nd+round+of+playoffs%20&id=4484913-THE+REMATCH-+Chargers-+Vikings+to+meet+in+2nd+round+of+playoffs&instance=homesports

PITTSBORO — Bill Hall and the Northwood Chargers will finally get their rematch.

After a 28-6 defeat of Northeastern in the first round of the 2-AA state football playoffs on Friday night, the 11-1 Chargers will get their opportunity to avenge their only loss of the season thus far.

The Chargers, a No. 5 seed and the runner-up in the five-team Carolina-9 Conference, will travel to No. 4 seed and conference champion South Granville in the second round next Friday.

Back in week 9, the Vikings (9-3) handed Northwood its first loss of the season. It was a game where the Chargers had five turnovers and failed to score until the fourth quarter of the 27-7 setback.

“It’s going to be a good ball game,” said Hall, who coached the Chargers to the second round of the playoffs for the fifth year in a row. “I know for a fact that we’re not going to turn the ball over five times again. If you take away the turnovers from our earlier meeting, it could have easily been a 7-7 game that went into overtime. South Granville is a good football team with a great group of athletes.”

The Vikings defeated No. 13 seed South Lenoir 35-7 on Friday night thanks to three touchdown runs from tailback Ian Bosley. The senior ran for touchdowns of 84, 59 and 45 yards en route a team high 235 yards on the night. Fellow tailback Clarence Peace had 20 carries for 135 yards and two touchdown runs of his own.

“We’re not going to stop Bosley,” said Bill Hall. “He’s going to get his yards. What we need to do is just limit his big plays. We need to keep him from breaking a 40 or 50-yard run. He’ll get his yards, there’s no question about it. We just have to keep him out of the end zone.”

Despite keeping Northeastern off the scoreboard until the third quarter of Friday’s win, Hall still saw a lot of things that his team must do better in order to make it to the third round for the fourth consecutive year.

“There’s always room for improvements,” said Hall. “Our offensive line has come a long way since the beginning of the season. We didn’t run the ball as we would’ve liked and we didn’t manage the clock very well. We need to fix those during this week of practice.”

Tailback Shane Peppers, the leading rusher for Northwood, was limited to just 37 yards on 14 carries.

“We need to get our rushing attack back on track,” said Hall. “It’s been a huge part as to how we got where we are. We’ve got to figure out a way for our tailbacks to find some holes to get some big plays.”

Bill Hall Quote before the game:

“I can also promise you that we won’t turn the ball over five times again,” said Hall. “That’s what killed us in the last game. You take away those turnovers and that’s a different ballgame. We might turn the ball over this time, but I can assure you that it won’t be five times.”

Chargers made good on his words.........what a game......"Honey of a game" said Tom Suiter on Football Friday.

After the game from Sanford Herald (Thank Goodness for Lee County Coverage of our HS!)

http://www.sanfordherald.com/pages/full_story/push?article-Football+playoffs-+Northwood+advances+after+overtime+win%20&id=4662521-Football+playoffs-+Northwood+advances+after+overtime+win&instance=home_sports2

The Northwood Chargers will practice on Thanksgiving.

In a thrilling back-and-forth game, the Chargers won in overtime for second time in three games and knocked off fourth-seeded South Granville 21-20 in the second round of the 2-AA football playoffs on Friday night.

“If ESPN Classic had been here, the game would be televised tomorrow,” said an exuberant Chargers coach Bill Hall. “This one was an instant classic.”

South Granville (9-4), which defeated Northwood 27-7 in October in a game that ultimately decided the 1-A/2-A Carolina 9 Conference championship, scored first in overtime on a 5-yard run by Ian Bosley on third down to take a 20-14 lead.

The lead remained six points, though, after Northwood’s Donyea Rhodes blocked the extra point, giving the fourth-seeded Chargers a chance to win the game outright.

And they did just that. On their first play in overtime, Northwood’s Shane Peppers romped 10 yards untouched for the touchdown, leaving the game up to sophomore placekicker Josue Pena.

And Pena delivered, sending the Chargers into the third round for the fourth straight year.

“It was just a great ballgame between two great teams,” Hall said.

The Chargers (12-1) will host ninth-seeded Kinston in the third round after the Vikings shocked top-seeded East Duplin 17-14 on Friday night.

Northwood took a 7-0 lead into the half after a 65-yard pass play from Sam Griffin to A.J. Farmer, but early in the third quarter, South Granville tied the game at 7.

On the ensuing kickoff, though, Peppers ran a reverse handoff to Tra Chandler, who took it to the house 80 yards for the score and a 14-7 Northwood advantage.

But the Vikings came right back, and with 3 minutes to go, Bosley rumbled 45 yards to knot the game at 14 and send it into overtime.

Hopefully, if we move the game from Northwood, we can get word out to the community........did not see Bill's post until after the game Friday....... Wink

p.s. I heard the "instant alert" system was used.....that took care of parents......but us, not hooked formally in to the school,  did not get that word........ No Worries though.....I'll miss half of every game if the second half can be like this one was!

From the N&O : http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/story/203571.html
===================================================================

OXFORD -- Northwood needed a play, and Donyea Rhodes delivered.

His team having already given up a touchdown on the opening possession of overtime, Chargers coach Bill Hall called on a point-after-touchdown block that they had been working on in practice and Rhodes knocked down Corey Phillips' extra point attempt.

On their possession, Northwood's Shannon Peppers scored from 10 yards out and Josue Pena converted on his extra-point opportunity, giving the Chargers a stirring 21-20 victory over South Granville to advance to the third round of the 2-AA playoffs.

"That block is something we work on every Monday and Thursday in practice," Hall said. "I'm glad it finally paid off for us."

The Chargers avenged a 27-7 loss to the Vikings earlier in league play.

The game, played in Oxford on Webb High School's campus, was scoreless until Sam Griffin hit A.J. Farmer, who out jumped a Vikings defender, gathered himself, and raced 68 yards to give Northwood a 7-0 lead in the second quarter that they would take into halftime.

South Granville (9-3), however, found its offensive rhythm in the second half, particularly star tailback Ian Bosley. The senior accounted for 74 yards on an 11-play, third-quarter drive that culminated in a Josh Thorpe 11-yard touchdown pass to Cory Hicks to tie the score 7-7.

Northwood (12-1) won despite turning the ball over three times and committing eight penalties.

Bosley ends his career with 5,986 yards rushing, which is an all-time record at South Granville.

OXFORD -- Often overlooked, extra points can prove vital in tight games. That certainly was true Friday night in Northwood's 21-20 overtime playoff victory against South Granville.

With the Vikings leading for the first time in the game after a 5-yard Ian Bosley touchdown on the first series of overtime, freshman Corey Phillips' point-after attempt never made it past the line of scrimmage. Northwood defensive tackle Donyea Rhodes broke through the Vikings' line and got his hand on the ball.

"The key was getting to overtime and blocking that extra point," Northwood coach Bill Hall said. "Donyea's a senior, a three-year letterman on varsity. He's got a future, going to play somewhere else some day."

Northwood's Shannon Peppers quickly tied the score with a 10-yard touchdown on the Chargers' first overtime offensive play. And Northwood kicker Josue Pena didn't disappoint his teammates, putting the ball through the uprights and sending his Chargers to the third round of the 2-AA playoffs.

"What can you say about Josue?" Hall said. "All the pressure in the world with him, and he boots it right down the pipe. And that's after struggling the last three or four games with his kicking."

The Chargers will host Kinston in the third round of the playoffs Friday. Kinston advanced by upsetting East Duplin 17-14.

Is there somewhere to view some sort of bracket listing for the playoffs?  Like how many games are left/who NHS will play?

Consolidating .....

Varsity Football Advances to 3rd Round with 21-20 OT Win over South Granville Fri. 11.20.09

The Varsity Football team advanced to the 3rd round of the State 2A Playoffs with a 21-20 overtime win over South Granville on Friday, November 20, 2009 at Oxford Webb High School. The victory allowed the Chargers to avenge their loss earlier in the season to their Carolina 9 Conference foe. The Chargers never trailed in regulation. However, in overtime, South Granville took its first lead of the game on a touchdown run on 3rd and goal from the 6 by Ian Bosley. However, Donyea Rhodes blocked the PAT and the score remained 20-14.

On the Chargers' first play of their overtime possession, tailback Shannon Peppers bounced off several would be tacklers and rambled into the end zone to tie the game at 20-20. After a South Granville time out to attempt to ice kicker Josue Pena, Pena connected on the PAT sending the Chargers into a frenzied celebration and on to the third round of the 2A State Playoffs with a 21-20 win over South Granville.

The Chargers struck first in the second quarter when quarterback Sam Griffin connected with wide out A.J. Farmer on a 68 yard touchdown pass down the left sideline to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead following Pena's PAT. On the play, Farmer outjumped two South Granville defenders and then raced untouched down the left sideline to paydirt.

After South Granville tied the score on their opening possession of the second half, Coach Hall reached into his bag of tricks on the ensuing kick off. Shannon Peppers flipped to Tra Chandler on a reverse and Chandler, as Farmer had before, raced untouched down the left sideline 84 yards to give the Chargers a 14-7 lead following Pena's PAT. All State tailback Ian Bosley would later tie the score at 14 on the first of his two touchdowns, a 54 yarder with just over 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, the Chargers were led by Terrance Gordon, Dylan Davis, Shannon Peppers, Tevin Page, and Brandon Saurine who each had tackles for losses. Austin Mathews, Terrance Gordon, and Brandon Shackelford each had quarterback sacks. Brendon Dibernard recovered a first quarter fumble, while Dylan Davis likely had the second most important defensive play of the game as he intercepted a pass with 25 seconds left that stopped a South Granville drive and forced the game to overtime.

The Chargers host Kinston this Friday night in the third round of the 2A State Playoffs here at Northwood at 7:30.
