I believe they are permitted to use the explosives. It is the only way they can get the rock down to a managable size. They do sound a siren before the plunge the trigger, but I have not heard how much notice they must give before using the explosives. It really got my attention at my house. The concussion made my ears pop. My wife came into the garage all freaked out. I thought it was funny only because I knew what it was.

So which was it? Kstraughn stated "Called Emergency Operations Office "and was told..."They" are destroying old explosives out on Landfill Rd. OR was it the rock quarry blasting on site?

I missed Kstraughn's reply. I assumed they were blasting at Luck Stone Quarry. I am sorry.

I was fortunately out of town and missed this drama, but I do not live far from the landfill. I am curious.... if such a boom can rattle the windows of our houses, can it be damaging to foundations and wells of houses nearby? Doesn't the county also have a sound ordinance for which such decibel levels are prohibitive [illegal]

According to my Hubby...who was a blaster for many years...if you are in the county and not in town limits there are no sound ordinances...this is how rock quarries can stay in business....the damage to foundations can be significant especially when blasting deep underground if you hit different density and the frequency of the blast vibration follows a rock seam or a crack and can travel for miles. There have been instances where the blast went under a town and caused structural damage on the other side of town without damaging the town itself. This is why it is so important that only truly knowledgable people should be blasting and even then there are no guarantees.

I was staying at my nana's house when I saw this. I told them about it and said they heard that too. They used to live on Pleasant Hill Church Rd about a month ago. They recently sold it and moved back to their house on Hadley Mill Rd. Then the house started to shake and they thought it was a tree that had fallen on the house. They both went outside to look and nothing was there. Thanks for informing me this now we finally know. Thanks again, Allie [Their granddaughter who is almost 10]
