I don't understand why people believe the Mustangs, Chargers and other leadsleds are needed. These cars have decent speed and acceleration in a STRAIGHT line, but if you actually ever need to be involved in a chase then you need something that will handle much better than these sloppy straight-line cars. Just like the muscle cars of the past, fast in a straight line and that's all they had to offer, but our country roads are far from straight and this is where superior handling is needed. No "muscle" car can give this. I'd like to see car manufacturers develop something new and refreshing instead of dolling up these anemic dinosaurs of the past.
Agreed, Ford went cheap with the Mustang rear suspension Something like this perhaps: I don't know if it is so much going cheap on the rear axle as giving a certain segment what it wants. Ford Racing makes a ton of money off of drag racers, and drag racers want the solid rear axle.

I would rather drive a sloppy poor handing 60's or 70's muscle car over a new piece of garbage built today.
Driving a musclecar is easy if you know the car and how it behaves under all driving conditions.

Here's a company that's focused solely on making police dedicated vehicles. http://www.carbonmotors.com/It's enough to make any cop drool.

Money. They sure do know how to spend money. Within the town limits, do you think there is really a need for the power and speed of a Mustang? ...I have been told that the PBO Mustang was purchased used from a dealer. If this is so the car is not pursuit rated, a true police unit has a rating to a certain speed... That's funny. We've gone from the criticism that it was too expensive and they didn't need all that speed and power to, okay it wasnt too expensive, but it doesn't have enough speed and power. Makes you think that it's always gonna be something wrong in Pittsboro.

For those of you saying the Mustangs are only good for straightaways, have YOU driven a new Mustang? I have a 2007, it takes curves better than any car I've driven.

Sure, a $70,000+ car for police duty...NOT.
A Porsche would not stand up to the type of abuse police cars take.

No But a subaru STI or Mitsubishi Evolution would - ever watch WRC? Hell the focus has better suspension and as much speed a quickness when done right. WRC.com

I saw a Chevette police car in Baltimore County, MD in the 80's. Sure it can flash a blue light but a Pinto could have outrun it. The one below looks like a 70's model.

Wow _ I remember that model chevette well - My dad bought one brand new with the "High output" engine - AC, cloth seats - basically a fully loaded Chevette. I still get a kick out of it - he lost two hubcaps - right front and left rear - put the remaining hubcaps on the drivers side then bought 2 completely different hubcaps for the passenger side - nobody ever noticed. I think we got 250k out of that one ;-)

I would bet that the average driver can not reach the potential of a GT2, and most would be better off in a Mustang. The GT2 is a great car for great drivers, but it can be a handful with it's rear engine, rear drive set up. A much better car for regular people would be an Audi R8.
