I saw somewhere on the internet about some police dept. bought a Lambourgini. It might have been in Europe somewhere. That would be funny to see in your rear view mirror.

Silk I am there with you. I will take an old muscle car anyday. I have had a few. I love to toy with them.

Today I was walking out of the pittsboro pta thrift shop when I saw a ford mustang go by. It was just like you said it was. It looked cooler than any other police car I've seen. But I know what I saw.     Almost 10 year old Allie.

I honestly think all these Mustangs, Chargers and even the new Camaros are still just washed up musclecars. The manufacturers brought these back out (except for the Mustang which never went away) to boost auto sales, but they still suffer from the same issues as the old school cars did. Not so great handling, body roll, etc.

Whhhhhhhhhhatttttttttt..... I'm a much bigger fan of motorcycles but I've got to admit the new Camaros, Mustangs and Chargers are gorgeous. Great power, great handling and surprisingly good mpg. I love Subarus and it would make a great pursuit vehicle but a horrible platform for a police cruiser. The Porsche would a miserable police platform, can you imagine one tearing through the median to do a turnaround. The nice thing about modern "muscle" cars is they are finally starting to integrate the best qualities of European cars with cars meant for the American market. But... all of them pale in comparison to the experience of being on a motorcycle.

To each his own. I wasn't really speaking of using a Porsche as a police cruiser, just asking if anybody had driven one because we were asked if we had driven a new Rustang since it is being dogged. I'd agree that the new wave of "musclecars" will handle better, have better fuel efficiency, etc. than the dinosaurs of the 60s and 70s, but they just can't handle like the imports. Trust me on this.

If I had to be a cop - I would be a motorcycle cop for sure.
No car of any make comes close.
But if I was a practical cop, I would be driving the suburban with a big honkin motor - can look down into cars, and push just about anything off the road, assuming you can catch up.  You can't outrun the motorola for sure.

The small imports could catch up and follow but indeed a poor platform to push them off the road or do the rolling roadblock with.
Just saying the mustang is probably not the best cop car but if they got it for free....

The HP uses Tahoes for a reason and they are pursuit rated.

The old dinosaur muscle cars will always be cooler than new stuff. Car guys have daily drivers that we beat on and abuse and leave our muscle cars at home to keep them in perfect shape. A new car shows prestige, an old car shows class.

I won't trust you on this but I will speak from personal experience. The new "muscle" cars don't experience the "not so great handling, body roll" feel remarkably like some of the better imports I've been in. I'm not sure where you've experience a GT2 as I don't know of any in this area, but it like all 911 based Porsche has a notorious reputation for body roll and over-steering (but insanely fun at throwing around curves). Subarus are great cars on twisty back roads because of their intelligent all wheel-drive but otherwise handle, welll.. fine. I'm not disagreeing that these are great cars but I don't think that dissing some the really great American cars that are finally coming out serves any useful purpose. They are great cars in their own right and like you said, to each his own.

Does not have to be american muscle though - I worked for a guy that had a '66 ferrari - let me drive it once or twice - amazing.

But if you have something you put your heart and soul into - you got my respect.
I'm not so sure about cooler....

fun, fun, fun, till her daddy took her...

never mind.

cop cars are offices for mobile officers. computers, partners, radios, and the cage in the back.

sigh. mobile offices, police stations on wheels.

but the Mustang sounds like a late decade (previous) scream of joy, in terms of an order. I hope they value it, and care for it. I bet it is used as a reward for whoever gets to drive it.

(I drove a Ferrari about that vintage one time. loved it.)

Alright, you folks can quit your bellyaching.  I asked the Sergeant driving the Mustang about it and he told me all about it.

As was previously stated, the Mustang was purchased by the Governor's Highway Safety Program.  That means that the town of Pittsboro paid a grand total of $0.00 for the car!  So there's no need to whine about your town tax dollars being wasted.  Also, the Governor's Highway Safety Program paid for the salary of one police officer (the Sergeant who drives the Traffic Enforcement Mustang) who's assigned to do strictly traffic enforcement; you know, catching speeders, drunk drivers, etcetera.  The ONLY thing Pittsboro PD will have to pay for is the officer's salary after three years.  That means for the next three years, Pittsboro doesn't pay a penny towards his salary.

Let's recap:

1.  Pittsboro will never pay a penny towards that Mustang
2.  Pittsboro has one more police officer patrolling the streets to keep them safe for YOU
3.  Pittsboro will not pay a penny towards the officer's salary until THREE YEARS from now

Thank you for taking the time to find out the facts.  It is good for PBO to have another officer keeping us safe, and helping some people see the benefits of slowing down.
