yes they did get a mustang and it was through a grant, but they wasted all that money on a show car?Huh? a hood scoop is that necessary? I did some research and looked at the gov. highway safety grants and how they work. The dept is allotted a certain amount of money to spend how they feel necessary and how it would serve the dept best. Is this the best way to spend the tax payer money? Nope it isn't.
I heard they bought a police dog also. Is this really necessary? The sheriff has a few dogs. Why does the police dept waste money on all this unnecessary equipment. How about fixing the crappy water system they have,?HuhHuhHuh?? or buy necessary resources to help the community.
It looks like the Mustang decked out is around $31,000.00 the crown Vic decked out is around $24,000.00 looked it up on Ford's build a car site on the police section
I work for the state and we keep loosing money on our fleet vehicles maybe the Governor needs to regulate these grants and how the recipient spends it

As for the Mustang, it's not like it's tricked out, and it's not a "show car."  It's a stock Ford Mustang GT.  Ford Mustang GT's come from the factory with hood scoops.  The chief wanted a car that would be unique, to set the department apart from the others, hence the Mustang GT.  The figures you posted might be accurate, except you've overlooked one important fact that's been touched on multiple times already: THE CAR IS USED.  It's a USED 2007 model with 20,000 miles on it.  It didn't break the bank.  A hood scoop?  You act like they threw that on to make it look cool.

As for the police dog, what's wrong with the agency having ONE police dog?  The Sheriff's Office doesn't have several dogs, I'm pretty certain there are only two for the entire county.  What if there's a foot chase in Pittsboro involving Pittsboro police officers and they need to apprehend the suspect quickly?  As I've stated before, I'm pretty sure there are only two dogs for the entire county.  That means that AT BEST there might be two K9 Deputies in the county at the same time, but most likely, there will only be one in the county at any given time.  Now, let's say that one K9 Deputy is over in Siler City and Pittsboro PD needs him fast, how long would it take for him to arrive and take down the suspect?  Longer than it is necessary.  It's not a huge crime for Pittsboro to have one dog/K9 officer of their own.

I work for the state and we keep loosing money on our fleet vehicles maybe the Governor needs to regulate these grants and how the recipient spends it

There are already regulations on these grants and how the recipient spends them.  That's why there's a set amount of money and why it's been agreed upon that the recipient spends it on a police vehicle for traffic enforcement....

Alright, you folks can quit your bellyaching.  I asked the Sergeant driving the Mustang about it and he told me all about it.

As was previously stated, the Mustang was purchased by the Governor's Highway Safety Program.  That means that the town of Pittsboro paid a grand total of $0.00 for the car!  So there's no need to whine about your town tax dollars being wasted.  Also, the Governor's Highway Safety Program paid for the salary of one police officer (the Sergeant who drives the Traffic Enforcement Mustang) who's assigned to do strictly traffic enforcement; you know, catching speeders, drunk drivers, etcetera.  The ONLY thing Pittsboro PD will have to pay for is the officer's salary after three years.  That means for the next three years, Pittsboro doesn't pay a penny towards his salary.

Let's recap:

1.  Pittsboro will never pay a penny towards that Mustang
2.  Pittsboro has one more police officer patrolling the streets to keep them safe for YOU
3.  Pittsboro will not pay a penny towards the officer's salary until THREE YEARS from now

Unless the Governor's Highway Safety Program has a printing press, someone's tax dollars paid for the Mustang.  Either my tax dollars, my children's or my grandchildren's.  And I repeat my original question.  On exactly which street in town will the car be used at it's full potential?

I never said that nobody paid for the car, or nobody's tax dollars paid for the car, I said nobody's TOWN taxes paid for the car.  I told people to quit fussing about their TOWN taxes being "wasted."  See, it's amazing how people have to have SOMETHING to fuss about.  And if people run out of things to fuss about, they'll complain that there's nothing to fuss about!

I've said it before and I'll say it again; there's absolutely nothing wrong with Pittsboro having a Mustang GT for traffic enforcement.  Apex PD has had several of them for two to four years or so and they love them.  They're VERY effective traffic enforcement tools and should be utilized if possible.  Again, this goes back to keeping the streets safe for YOU.

And I repeat my original question.  On exactly which street in town will the car be used at it's full potential?

On exactly which street in town will a Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor be used at its full potential?  None.  It doesn't matter whether or not its full potential will be used.  Ford CVPIs are great cars and are fast cars but their full potential will never be used inside Pittsboro, so your point is moot.  The point of utilizing ANY vehicle in a law enforcement agency is not to "use it at its full potential."  The point of a police vehicle is to make traffic stops, respond quickly to calls, and in some cases, participate in chases; all of which the Mustang GT is FULLY capable.

Firstly, I'm not a spokesperson for Pittsboro Police Department.  Secondly, you're beating a dead horse.

I saw this car in the Food Lion parking lot the other week around lunch time. It caught my eye, first thought was HP vehicle, then I noticed the local insignia.
If they want to sit on the outskirts of PBO from the N-15-501 direction and nail people that are trying to crawl up into my backseat via tailgating, just because I am doing the speed limit through there, then more power to them!

Yes, the Sergeant will be patrolling the two main highways, taking advantage of Pittsboro's 3-mile jurisdiction outside the town limits.  This means he'll be able to enforce traffic laws on the 64 Bypass and 15-501.  Most agencies are allowed authority up to one mile outside of their town or county limits (depending on if it's town/city PD or county Sheriff's Office), but Pittsboro is one of two towns in North Carolina that are legally allowed authority up to three miles outside of the town limits, so the Sergeant will take advantage of this for traffic enforcement.  This also means he won't be stuck inside downtown Pittsboro, sitting around clocking people doing 45 in a 35; he'll actually be able to do real traffic enforcement.  Smiley

I would not mind seeing him catch all of the people that speed through the Horton school zone as well.  Either way, I am glad he is out there getting people to slow down.  I wish him luck in his duties.

I want to see the police department focus on the speeders downtown on main street where it is supposed to be 20 miles an hour and no left turn on mainstreet...the traffic flow would be much better if these folks would adhere to traffic laws...maybe the cops will stop some of this.

I don't care what MPH zone I am in, I don't want someone trying to rub the numbers off my license plate with their front bumper! Tailgaiting just annoys me, it causes unnecessary fender benders or worse.

If the Sgt. sees traffic infractions in town he'll do something about it but his job is to focus on catching actual speeders (excessive speeds like 65+ MPH) and drunk drivers.  However, the rest of the patrol officers with Pittsboro Police Department are still patrolling everywhere like they always have, so if they see something, they'll take action.

I have no doubt that the LEO will act on what they see...it is the unseen that is a problem and this new car and officer will help widen their eyes...one more person on patrol will help...don't you think? I feel sometimes that downtown gets ignored because there is so much going on everywhere else...it is very dangerous with the tailgating downtown.

Yes, I absolutely do think one more person on patrol will help, and I agree it would be preferable that downtown isn't overlooked, but it's like you said, there's so much that goes on elsewhere that downtown sometimes takes a back seat to the rest of the town.

oh great Im soooooo excited that my city tax dollars will go to enforcing crime 3 miles outside the city limits!!!! thats great!
3 miles outside the city limits is the responsibility of the county and the state, NOT the Pittsboro Police Department!!
And for you NOT being the spokesman for the police department, you sure seem to be right up in the butt of whats going on!!!
I have lived in Chatham for 25 years, and this is getting ridiculous.
And for me beating a dead horse.............you obviously don't live in Pittsboro so what do you care how our tax dollars are spent!!!!!!!!!!!
