Varsity Football Advances to 3rd Round with 21-20 OT Win over South Granville Fri. 11.20.09
The Varsity Football team advanced to the 3rd round of the State 2A Playoffs with a 21-20 overtime win over South Granville on Friday, November 20, 2009 at Oxford Webb High School. The victory allowed the Chargers to avenge their loss earlier in the season to their Carolina 9 Conference foe. The Chargers never trailed in regulation. However, in overtime, South Granville took its first lead of the game on a touchdown run on 3rd and goal from the 6 by Ian Bosley. However, Donyea Rhodes blocked the PAT and the score remained 20-14.
On the Chargers' first play of their overtime possession, tailback Shannon Peppers bounced off several would be tacklers and rambled into the end zone to tie the game at 20-20. After a South Granville time out to attempt to ice kicker Josue Pena, Pena connected on the PAT sending the Chargers into a frenzied celebration and on to the third round of the 2A State Playoffs with a 21-20 win over South Granville.
The Chargers struck first in the second quarter when quarterback Sam Griffin connected with wide out A.J. Farmer on a 68 yard touchdown pass down the left sideline to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead following Pena's PAT. On the play, Farmer outjumped two South Granville defenders and then raced untouched down the left sideline to paydirt.
After South Granville tied the score on their opening possession of the second half, Coach Hall reached into his bag of tricks on the ensuing kick off. Shannon Peppers flipped to Tra Chandler on a reverse and Chandler, as Farmer had before, raced untouched down the left sideline 84 yards to give the Chargers a 14-7 lead following Pena's PAT. All State tailback Ian Bosley would later tie the score at 14 on the first of his two touchdowns, a 54 yarder with just over 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Defensively, the Chargers were led by Terrance Gordon, Dylan Davis, Shannon Peppers, Tevin Page, and Brandon Saurine who each had tackles for losses. Austin Mathews, Terrance Gordon, and Brandon Shackelford each had quarterback sacks. Brendon Dibernard recovered a first quarter fumble, while Dylan Davis likely had the second most important defensive play of the game as he intercepted a pass with 25 seconds left that stopped a South Granville drive and forced the game to overtime.
The Chargers host Kinston this Friday night in the third round of the 2A State Playoffs here at Northwood at 7:30.
