Live Laugh Love

« on: December 14, 2009, 01:55:41 PM »

I recentally went to the thrift store in Pittsboro and was very upset upon leaving!  A 3 year old little girl was telling her mother she needed to use the potty, when the mother asked the store clerk, she replied "we don't have a public restroom in the store, you need to go next door to giggly wiggly!" as the mother replied, "this is ridiculous!" and continued out the store, The small child proceeded to wet her self. I found this to be very upsetting. The little girl looked ashamed, as she had done something wrong, although she hadn't! after all, she told her mother when she had the urge to go! I find it ridiculous that with ALL the money the store makes, they cant afford to have a public restroom. I do go to the thrift store often, and usually there are lot of people and children in the store, I have no problem holding mine, but frankly, small children have NO CONTROL of that situation yet! I'm hoping something is done to solve this PROBLEM soon!
Just my opinion and thoughts,... Sad

And if the woman had taken her child next door instead of causing a scene, maybe the girl wouldn't have wet herself.

Given how fast it seemed to happen I doubt having a restroom in the thriftstore would have mattered.  Not that it's their responsibility to provide a bathroom anyway.

It's probably more of a public liability insurance issue than a construction/cost issue, but that's just a guess. As a parent, I can relate to the problem though. Next time, I'm sure they could also use the facilities at City Tap or the General Store, which aren't too far away.

I also imagine that there are a good deal of silly regulations about public restrooms, and what is required by law, and it also creates a theft/safety issue for employees to deal with every day. Overall, I wish they had one too, but I think I understand some of the reasons why they don't offer one.

On the other hand, given the situation - what's the big deal? I hear ya.

Agree with NCYippie on the liability issue.  That's probably why there is not a public bathroom.

(But Yip, what Thrift Store are you talking about?  The one near City Tap moved to beside the Piggly Wiggly a year or so ago.)

Oh, I didn't know that. Is there a rest room in the Piggly Wiggly? Is it next door? Things happen with kids, of course, but she should have told Mommy about it a bit earlier. Isn't there a Pizza Hut over that way too?

What kind of liability?  Toddlers being potty-trained do not allow for "planned" bathroom trips, just access at a moment's notice.  I have never thought a public establishment not having a bathroom to be a liability - just a matter of not wanting to clean up after John Q. Public. So much for that sale!

Of course "all the money they make" is for the SCHOOLS in our county, not to line their own pockets.

mom's job to plan and prepare for potty training, not the PTA's.

Some of yall are downright hostile today.  Are you missing the sun or something?

I am guessing the problem was that the mother did not realize a store would not have a bathroom, and after she found out, it was too late.  I know I would have just assumed that every business that serves the public has a bathroom for customers.  I also think some people expect more out of a 3 year old than they are capable of.

Kids are not experts at holding their bodily functions. Sometimes I think that prople without young children or forget what is was like to have young children do expect more than what they are capable of (like Wolfie said).

In my opinion they should let the public use the restroom. They just dont want to clean it.

sure, but isn't it the parent's responsibility to make sure there are going to be restrooms available and arrange the daily schedule around toilet training?  You can't honestly wander about town demanding that places with no public restroom--that have never claimed to have a public restroom--accommodate you.

There's plenty of them - most Dollar Stores do not have a public restroom, Pope's doesn't, I don't think CVS has one either. Again, I empathize with the situation, just know "that it's just the way it is" some places.

The liability would be issues like they are more likely to slip and fall in a room that has water access, or something like that, which would raise insurance costs. The other thing is that customers often try and take unpaid merchandise into the rest rooms, so there's that issue as well. It would be nice, sure, but it would raise the overhead a bit plus some up front costs.

the lower we keep overhead at the PTA Thrift store the more money goes to the schools.  The restroom at Piggly Wiggly is close enough!

some businesses have to have them, some don't. if you have to, you have to have handicapped access and that costs a lot.

you are taking a chance if you allow someone into a private area, which a bathroom for employees is. that is how the Intimate book store was torched. someone using the employee bathroom downstairs started the fire.
