http://www.yellowpagesgoesgreen.org/   Opt out

Or call direct to cancel delivery:

Idearc 1 800 888 8448  (Opt Out Of Verizon Yellow Pages)
AT&T 1 800 922 0008   (Opt Out Of the Real Pages)
Dex 1 877 243 8339     (This will also work for Embarq)
Yellow Book 1 800 888-8448

Hint: If you have a different book/publisher than the above, look in the phonebook for the number to order more directories.  Same number to cancel, but they don't say that....

877-goog-411 rules.   Its free and if you call from your cell phone and say text message you don't even need a pen.

do text message rates apply?

huh.

I assume they do, but they'll say they number to you for free.

As an advertiser in the phone books, I can tell you why they deliver to every house. As much as they charge to list your
business, I would hate it if they delivered by request only. If I'm spending $150 per month for an ad, I would at least like to know that the majority of households are receiving a book.  I also wish they would do something different, like put them in the mailbox if there is one.

as an advertiser I hope you take into account how many people are expressing that they not only don't use their phonebooks but also have negative feelings toward it when you're making your decisions in the years to come.  I hope to see phonebooks phased out eventually!

You take it into account but you also understand that a significant segment of society still needs them. I use them when looking for folks who do not list themselves on the computer. Small engine repair and the like.

The other issue is finding names in the white pages without being led down the road to pay people finding services.

Sure, I see where you're coming from.  It's probably not time yet to abandon the paper phonebook.

FWIW anyone who is listed in the paper yellow pages is also listed in the online yellow pages.

I am highly skeptical of those opt outs.  You think the guy whose job it is to toss them out the car window as they drive by takes the time to check the address?  I don't.  I think I opted out last year, and I still got one this year.

Years ago a school collected all the expired phone books and sold them to a company that recycles paper. Might this been an option to raise fund for our schools?

It might be worth a few phone calls but I believe the market for post-consumer paper has changed a lot and you might have a hard time finding a buyer.

just came from the barber shop.  saw a 5 year old sitting on the internet so the barber could reach his head.  guess that's the end of the phone book thread!

We sometimes use the excess books for doorstops at work, when we desire to leave the doors open and let the fresh air in!

I declined a hand delivered copy (I'm downtown) just to show up the next morning with one in front of my door.  Such a waste of resources.

I've noticed the mail carriers have successfully smooshed some of them into the mud lately. Guess they will biodegrade...once the plastic cover does Angry
