Didn't the Sears store have a restroom, when it was in that same location?

Why don't the non-profits team up in a case like this?  I mean, why doesn't Habitat offer to build the PTA a restroom if PTA helps man the Habitat store for a week or so?

I was wondering about Sears having one, but don't remember if they did. It would stand to reason that if they had, it would still be there though. Good point about the non-profit and habitat though.

It's a good idea, but Habitat doesn't even do its own plumbing. They use professional contractors for that.

And maybe those professional contractors have kids in the schools...

I love the thrift shop, and the "sport" of finding a deal.  I wish they had a public restroom... don't have children, but I do have a puny bladder and I also love my coffee.  That's all I have to say about THAT!
BUT, I recognize the thrift shop has modest means (in an older building probably not designed for public restrooms), and channels proceeds to the schools... I'm also on that sheet of music. I sometimes sneak into Pizza Hut.... (hope I don't get busted now).

There is a public bathroom at the Carrboro location of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools Thrift Stores.  It has come in handy on occasion when shopping or volunteering.

I love all our Thrift shops.

I guess it's the same with the Chatham stores - When in Chapel Hill we most often volunteered for a specific school.  Our volunteer hours were credited to the school we used at the time of sign-in.  When the kids hit middle school & high school we could usually volunteer for a specific program or project at their school.  I loved that option as I could give an hour to football boosters, later an hour to Wrestling boosters and then the Drama Dept and Choral Depts.

At the end of the school year all the volunteers hours were added up.  The funds were distributed accordingly.  The group with the most hours got the most money and on down the list.  It was amazing how a small group could really raise some serious money.

I guess it's the same with the Chatham stores.

According to the Chatham PTA Thrift website, they have contributed 4 MILLION dollars since they began...keep in mind it was small at the beginning. But, WOW that is a lot of money and a lot of merchandise handled, considering the price of things starting at 25 cents and go up! As, Patty pointed out in her post, the sum of money (over 400K) in one year is an amazing testimonial to the funds they provide to the schools.
I have volunteered, donated to, purchased from the stores. I've come to know many of the employees and they are very dedicated hard working people. I so appreciate the job they do.
Doesn't bother me in the least that they don't have a public restroom. Not as though they are the only store that this is the case and they shouldn't be singled out for such.

Once again,  the store has a restroom. It is located in the WORK AREA !! It is congested, unsafe and piled high with merchandise. The public is not allowed in the work area because IT IS NOT SAFE !!

Always interesting to read different opinions.....I've never expected any store etc. to have a public restroom, other than restaurants/bars.

Just because they don't have a restroom that is safe to get to and open to the public, doesn't mean they couldn't have one.

Just because it "isn't safe" to walk to the rest room doesn't mean it couldn't be made so.

Just because it isn't "usually" open to the public, doesn't mean it couldn't be in case of an emergency.

If the storage area is truly so unsafe that a mother couldn't escort her child to the bathroom, then OSHA ought to be called for the sake of the workers and volunteers.

If this was a private business, it would be shut down or shouted down.  Once more the statists take every chance to excuse the poor condition of the non-profit/governmental world, while trying to convince us that we need even more of it.

The PTA performs an incredibly good service in a difficult environment.  That doesn't mean that they're always right or that they shouldn't be looking for improvement every day.  It certainly doesn't put them above criticism.

AGAIN, PTA should not be singled out. Many other stores do not have a public restroom option.
If this is the issue, then start your band wagon on ALL...and then you will complain about the rise in prices for products and services I suppose Huh

Look - unless you have been a volunteer and have visited that back room, you don't really understand how much STUFF is precariously stored in such a small place. I completely understand why the Thrift Shop does not have that bathroom open to the public.
I have kids and I understand how irritating it is not to have a public restroom available, but the fact is that the Pig, right next door, allows people to use the restroom and you can also walk across the parking lot to the Pizza Hut.
