Snow Delays Young's Explanation To Judge

Former John Edwards’ aide Andrew Young’s appearance before a Pittsboro judge, regarding the court-ordered return of materials belonging to the former mistress of the would-be president, was cancelled due to weather.

Last Friday, Young was ordered to explain to a judge why he shouldn’t be held in contempt for refusing to turn in the photographs and videotapes. Last Thursday, Hunter filed a motion at the Orange County courthouse for a temporary restraining order prohibiting Young from promoting, distributing, and/or selling the items. She says the videotape is of a personal and private nature and the photographs are of her and the former senator’s daughter Francis Quinn.  When served with the papers by Major Charles Blackwood of the Orange County Sheriffs’ Office, Young politely refused. Orange County Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass says Young called his attorney before declining to hand over the materials but didn’t cause deputies any problems.

Young’s appearance has not yet been rescheduled. Young is in New York City for scheduled and highly publicized media appearances for his new book, “The Politician,” which includes an exclusive radio interview with WCHL.

Young Found In Contempt Of Court
02/05/10 12:11PM

By Walter Storholt
WCHL Reporter
(With additional reporting by Lynda-Marie Taurasi)

Andrew Young, the former aide to John Edwards, appeared in a Chatham County courthouse today.

Superior Court Judge Abraham Penn Jones found Young and his wife Cheri in contempt of court and set a deadline for 2 p.m. Wednesday for the videotape, and other items to be turned in.

If the Youngs don’t turn in the items by the deadline they could face jail time.

Rielle Hunter, Edwards’ former mistress, claims the videotape and other items to be of a very personal nature. She sued the Youngs to regain possession of the various items

The judge had ordered Young to bring the videotape, as well as other items, to the courthouse today, but the items are in different locations. One item is in Atlanta, the videotape is in Washington, D.C. and a laptop containing ‘private’ pictures is in Raleigh.

WCHL will continue to cover this story. We’ll have comments from Andrew Young during the WCHL Evening News.
