Bring out your yogurt cartons...
Collection Centers Add Margarine & Yogurt Containers as Recyclables

Effective Monday, February 22, Chatham County residents can recycle food-contact plastics containers, such as margarine and yogurt tubs, as long as they are marked number 1 to 7 plastic.
"These can be brought to any of the county's 12 collection centers, but we may have to end this option if market conditions change and we can no longer recycle these plastics," said Robert Holden, director of Waste Management.
"We depend on buyers of our recycled goods to keep these programs going and we are not sure how long the recycling of these plastic food containers will last. The market is unstable, but our citizens really want to recycle as much as possible and we want to help them do that whenever we can. We just hope that we can keep this portion of the plastics recycling program going," Holden noted.
Residents should put the containers in the plastic bottle recycling bins at the collection centers. "However, please make sure they are clean and remove the lids. Also, do not include any motor oil or chemical containers, such as pesticides and herbicides, which are not recyclable," Holden added.
"I do want to remind residents to wash out all recycled items and make sure they are deposited in the correct bins at the collection centers. It can mean lost revenue for the county if recycled bins have the wrong items in them," Holden said.
