Tritech, this situation could be easily remedied if you just "change the channel". No one is making you read the survey, the Chatlist or the BBS. I encourage you to start your own survey and or Chatlist. (there is a group that broke away and started their own board). Gene should not have to explain his actions here to anyone. He does this voluntarily. You have to join under your own power. So, instead of being so critical, move on. Use the businesses you like. Survey your customers personally. Join Angie's List. Just relax. Gene is going to get fed up one day and shut this whole thing down.

What part of "you haven't even put out results for my business category" did you fail to understand, or wish to avoid? I don't see how your "survey sucks because my business didn't win" applies when I have NO CLUE if it did or not.

Instead of SOUNDING like a sore loser, why don't you start your own Best of Siler City, Best of Goldston, Best of Moncure, Best of Silk Hope, etc. surveys.

Let us all know when they are up and running.

Gene calls this survey "best of Chatham" and from what I have ben seeing,, it's only "Best of Pitsboro with some other places included a tiny bit if you're lucky."

Don't forget to cc your concerns to the Independent Weekly about their "Best of the Triangle" survey.   angel

Gene,
On the survey, is there a way to see how many votes/entries each business received?

'I want to know if 80% of your responses are Pittsboro citizens so I can decide i.e. that Siler City Automotive is not the "winner" because Performance Automotive happened to be where the majority of responses originated.'

Tritech, I think that we can assume that the statement above is true, so no harm, no foul.

I'm a long-time resident of Siler City too and have often had the same thoughts as you regarding the BBS, but after seeing the very large number of posts regarding Northwood, Cole Park, 15-501, and Virlies, as opposed to, say, Jordan-Matthews, Siler Crossing, 421 and Brownie Lu's, it became obvious that the strength and numbers are in the northeast portion of the county. We may not like it, but those are just facts. I don't think any slights are intended by the vote tally; we all support businesses that are in the most convenient location for for us.

But I'll just have to vent on one of my pet peeves about a few posters who live in the Pittsboro/NE area. Often, someone will post some information about an event/happening and indicate that it will take/took place "near McDonald's" or "south of the courthouse," without saying in what town. Siler City has both a McDonald's and a courthouse. When I investigate the location a little further, I find the poster always means the Pittsboro area. I'm just calling here for a little less ethnocentricity and a realization that this is a large and diverse county.

I think we need district voting for country commissioners and Best of Chatham Surveys.

You're right, of course.  I only ask for that info to be part of the survey results.  Now working on a new message board, must go.

Good idea - best of luck!

When you get your board up and running and do your own "Best of Chatham" be sure to have BEST BBS as one of your categories. Smiley

When it's ready to go, I'll let everyone know.  I've already started the domain registration process, and I'll be requesting community input on how the thing should be run so the users will have some say in what the rules are.  Flame

Contact John Hammond of the Chatham Coalition, he has submitted numerous rules list and the proper way to run a BBS. angel

Oh, I will.  Anyway, setting up the actual forum categories and forums now.  Should have all of this ready by Monday at the latest.

Wow, that's quick. Keep us posted.

I decided to take a quick glance at the survey results published for Best of Chatham 2007 and 2008 to see what the geographical distribution looked like, and the geo-bias is now blatantly obvious.  While some businesses don't have any address at all, most do, and only 4-5 businesses in 2007 and again in 2008 that "won" a Best Of spot were outside of the Pittsboro-Chapel Hill corridor.  I have also received some anonymous mail indicating that people have been banned from this forum for bringing up the NE Chatham bias.  It's been more than just one random message, too.  I've also done a little research and discovered that the county has about 63,000 people with about 15,000 households total, meaning Gene's Best of Chatham County 2009 survey sample size of about 450 responses represents 0.714% of the total county population, or if one household = one sample, about 3% of Chatham households are being represented.  The history of Best of Chatham is heavily biased toward NE Chatham County, and anyone doubting the factual validity of that statement can go to Chatham Journal and tally the winners' city results for themselves.

In conclusion, my guess that this is actually a "Best of Pittsboro" survey in practical application was mostly correct (with the only exceptions being i.e. Johnson's whose reputation follows them for hundreds of miles around), so this list is only helpful for NE Chatham residents and not anyone else.  Case closed.  Thanks for everyone that sent me helpful information about this.

You seem hell bent on widening the (East/West) "divide" in this county via some displaced animosity. WHY?

I also am perplexed by the divide you are drawing here Tritech (is your name Jody? I thought I saw that on here somewhere)

I live in Pittsboro but serve all of Chatham County. I believe that most listed on "The Best of Chatham" do as well.

The facts are, quite simply..get ready for this...THERE ARE NOT MANY BUSINESSES LOCATED IN SILER CITY. Period. That's not a dig, just the truth. I want this to change - I hope that Siler City can thrive with businesses that can serve our entire county.

I have seen your posts on here and sent a customer or two your way. But I also don't have many customers in Siler City as...get ready for this...THERE ARE NOT MANY BUSINESSES LOCATED IN SILER CITY.

Sorry to be a smartass but your posts are starting sound bitter and I am not sure how likely I will be to send more your way. Relax dude. You are being given a voice here. Free advertising - for your business AND your new forum.

You seem hell bent on widening the (East/West) "divide" in this county via some displaced animosity. WHY?

Read the whole thread before you jump to conclusions.  I noticed that every "Best of Chatham" result for 2009 that has been released so far is in Pittsboro or immediately above it.  Pittsboro is only a small portion of the county.  Worst of all, Gene himself completely avoided the issue and told me to "stop being a sore loser," despite the fact that where I work doesn't have a category in the results above for it to "win" or "lose" within.  In essence, he called me names and wrote me off as a nutter when I tried to politely get more information on how this survey was conducted.  READ THE THREAD

If it's not representative of the county as a whole, don't call it "Best of CHATHAM."  That's all there is to it.  Siler City is the biggest city in the county, and there are many smaller townships as well, yet somehow no businesses from there are "the best of Chatham."  That kind of representation is false.  Why does that bother you so much?
I grew up in Siler City 50+MORE years ago, than I like to admit. I still support the businesses there and have promoted them on this BBS, new and the oldest (Farmer's Alliance). I return there regularly. Your snarky, snippy attitude makes me doubtful that I would check you out. Before this display, maybe I would have, just saying.
Yes, I do live in the NE now. It is where my profession took me for convenience for my job. I support the businesses in this area also.
If people in certain areas of the county did not vote on this survey, it is no fault to the moderator. A number of factors likely weighed in. One being some on dial up and wouldn't live long enough to make their way through it laugh
I, for one would really like to see the county work together to become greater as one, vs. continuing this silly "war" of west/east, any compass points.
You just seem to want to create a divide stir IMO. I don't think that is healthy for the county.

The East West bias on the BBS has been here for a long time, we have been told to deal with it. Siler is a great place to live, it is laid back and friendly and I am proud to be a part of the community. It is unfortunate that so many Eastereners turn their nose up at the West and vice versa.

It is unfortunate this thread had grown into this however it has been an argument that has been growing for quite sometime.
