we know we are here, and we vote. and we will blast you out of the water come election day.
Huh? that was for integrityticket, not you. but many, many people use those pathways, and will be grateful for the sidewalk. Most of those voters that you "see" have little idea what shenanigans have gone on in our county. Not everyone read this message board or follows local politics. If they really knew, I'd have to think they'd want different leadership. It goes much deeper than a sidewalk. not as deep as the mud puddles I have jumped on that route. the voters need only know who provided the sidewalk, which is the Coalition. Done deal. Huh. I've never actually known anyone to endorse voter ignorance. This is a first. well, that is because it would not be ignorance, it would be a fact. the Coalition Board provided a sidewalk to a mostly poor group of users, in a neighborhood that is heavily populated by liberal voters. smoke that.

Smoke what?
I'm not talking about a single project here belle. I'm talking about the laundry list of things our local government has done that would not sit well with the average citizen if they knew about them.
You know, those things you'd prefer voters be ignorant about.

Sorry that this discussion has taken the detailed level that it has....BUT the point is not so much that the sidewalk may or may not be needed by whoever walked down the highway enough to create those grass paths.....
...but moreso, is this the appropriate time to be spending this tax money on this project?
Certainly there are other things that will generate some type of revenue for the county or the county residents (other than the construction workers ,,,,, but those are probably state workers).
And if there is some type of Walmart or other bigbox going in at the County Line development on the south side of 15/501, let THEM pay for the sidewalks.
And for what it is worth, I cannot recall seeing any number approximating even a single thousand people walking down that section of highway over the past 13 years...much less TEN thousand or more....not that I have been counting......as someone in this post apparently has.

Why weren't the property owners assessed for the value of the sidewalk and sent a bill? It is basically a free improvement to their property.

I wish those of you upset about the side walk would have attended the public hearing about it last August. Now, it's too late for your voice to have any impact. http://chatham-county-nc.com/bulletinboard/index.php/topic,14377.msg151749.html#msg151749This is why it is so important for you to pay attention to when there are public meetings, attend, and SPEAK.

Thinking back to some of the discussions early last year when the county was first awarded these funds, the choice of what to do with them was very limited. Given the amount of money involved, restrictions on what it could be used for and the time frame in which it had to be spent there wasn't much they could do with it. This wasn't a case where someone decided to build the sidewalk and then tried to find funds for it. This was a case where the county got the money and then had to find a quick way to spend it.
Of course that was the problem with a lot of the federal stimulus projects.
There was a discussion at the March 16, 2009 BOC meeting during the Preliminary Plat Approval Request by Lee Moore Capital Company (the County Line Site). Commissioner Kost specifically wanted to make the developer pay for the sidewalk along that stretch of the road because they could require it under the subdivision ordinance. This was despite the fact that the developer had owned the land for 35 years and no other business was going to have to install sidewalks. Also, while the county could definitely get approval from the state DOT to place the sidewalk in their right of way, it was not clear if the landowner could. Furthermore, there was enough stimulus money to pay for the whole stretch and not much else that could be done with it. I don't know what was finally decided, just what was discussed at that meeting since I was at that one.
There's no doubt a sidewalk along there would be useful. This is just a good example of the haphazard way projects are being funded with stimulus funds.

This sums it all up for me.

You humans, most of you, subscribe to this policy of an eye for an eye, a life for a life, which is known throughout the universe for its… stupidity. Even your Buddha and your Christ had quite a different vision; but nobody's paid much attention, not even Buddhists or Christians.--prot (K-Pax)
