Siler City has a program called Adopt a Street.  My wife and I have adopted almost a mile stretch of road in Siler City.  This program is something that can be utilized by Pittsboro as well.  Myself along with the community Police Officer are in the process of getting the information for the Adopt-a-Street program in attempt to implement this program in our community.  The requirements are; that whatever person or organization adopts a street, they agree to do a minimum of 4 streetside trash pickups a year.  The way the program is set up is, the town or city provides trash bags, gloves, and safety vests for the resident(s) or organization.  The resident(s) or organization picks up the trash and leaves the bags on the side of the roadway for the town or city to pick them up. Of course you will have to notify whoever is in charge of the program that you are doing a trash pickup on a certain date and time, and notify them when you have completed the pickup so they can secure the bags of trash.  This is something that can get the whole community involved and the program provides Adopt-a-Street signs with your name or business name that are placed on the stretch of road you have adopted, much like the Adopt a Highway program but more localized.

I'd prefer the littering would stop, but we all know that isn't going to happen.
It really doesn't take a lot of effort for us to pitch in and pick up a stretch, be it small scale, locally, formally as a adopt a street or a stretch of highway.
I have family in Siler and I have seen the adopt a street signs and noticed the cleanliness! Kudos to those folks. May it all grow county wide!

Here is the adopt a highway site for those interested out of the city limits wherever.
It is also a good model for cities to adopt. Nothing new, gone on since the 80's. Waxes and wanes in sponsors tho it seems. But wherever the pickup, picks up would be a good thing, just saying Smiley

Maybe you should consider the Adopt-A-Highway program. You adopt a 2 mile stretch of road and commit to clean that stretch four times a year. We have found it is easily done with a group of six in only an hour or so depending how messy the road is. We really enjoy getting out there to do our part in keeping Chatham County clean. Plus the exersize and chit-chat. The program provides vests, bags, gloves and trash pick up and you get a sign dedicated to your group at the begining and end of the stretch of road you are commited to. The coordinator for our area is Robin Akers 336-629-1423

You can count me in, I recently posted on neighbor to neighbor about my trashy neighbors at the intersection of Arthur Teague and Silk Hope rd. Last week I got behind that family(?) as they were apparently going to the dump and trash was flying all over the road out of the back of their truck. Not only do they live like pigs at home but they have to trash up the rest of the county.

LOVE the idea of adopt of street program in Siler City. Those of you along McLaurin Rd, specifically Dalton Estates, would you be interested in such a commitment? I would be happy to do the legwork if there's interest. Oakrun, could you pass the idea along to the Bindas if they haven't seen this post? I'll get in touch with Gloria and she, the Franks. I have picked up enough beer cans and Hardee's bags to know there's a need.

Hey there! I had actually already discussed this with my husband (he is on board with it) and mentioned it to Jon F. as well (we commute 3x per week).

See what we need to do, and we'll get it under way.  Cheesy

I spoke with Mayor Voller last night concerning this effort. He is on board and I will have more details soon.  What i find surprising is over 1500 folks have read this post but only 25 or so have replied. Yo Are All Winners and make me proud to Live in Chatham County!

There are doers and talkers, lets find more doers and make this Clean up effort happen!

Ok read the thread and willing in theory, tho ability to get out and do stuff sort of waxes and wanes these days.

There are huge fines for littering ($500?) but hardly anyone or no-one ever prosecuted because it's so hard to see em.

I must relate that I was standing near a car where a young man threw a candy wrapper on the street and I told him off and either handed it back or ordered him out to pick it up. Amazingly it worked!

I recommend telling anyone with a camera phone to take a picture of litters license plate and turn them in!Re clean up. Putting all that trash in more plastic makes little sense. Though more expensive are there cornstarch bags like they make the picnic utensils out of. Also Home Depot (maybe Lowes) sells packs of really large double thick paper lawn and leaf bags. I used those when I had a massive shredding task so the whole bag could go (closed) into mixed paper bin.

Have you read about that gigantic floating mass of plastic particles in the Pacific? It kills all sort of marine life, and is formed by some kind of vortex currents. The ocean is basically the destination of every plastic bag that isn't buried. I hate em and don't use em, or if I have to, several times over or donate them back to PTA or such.

Sad to say, plastic doesn't bio-degrade, but it sure does degrade. Especially in sunlight. So it's not useful any more but all the tiny bits are everywhere. Ugh.

A big Thank you to Mayor Voller, for taking charge last week and organising a clean up. Also Thank you to all the volunteers and Church's that got behind the effort.

Now that said, we need to do more.
