I have been walking everyday, trying to loose some weight and our community is so trashy I cant hardly believe my eyes. Litters should be publicly stoned! Now insted of reacting it is time to be proactive...Are you with me? Being new to the community I don't know what city office is responsible for keeping the city clean, that being the case is there a city wide or county wide clean up movement? If not perhaps the great citizens of Pittsboro and Chatham county would like to join together and hold a clean up event weekend? Hey we could make a community event and get sponsors from the local business community and the city for trash bags , supplies and transportation. Here a thought, as a reward for investing your time to make our county and town a cleaner place to live we could have an old time pig pickin celebration? Hey I am sure we could get the PIG and cooker donated and I will even provide the PA system, and DJ the party playing some great music. What ever it takes, we live here and should be proud to live in such a great county and have such a great town that still has that old time charm. So if anybody is fed up with the trash situation as I am and wants to make a difference let me know and if enough want to commit to putting something positive together let just do it! BM

Siler City has mounted a recent clean-up campaign, coordinated by its Planning and Community Development office. You might want to contact Pittsboro's.

I <3 this post! I don't live in PBO, but I'm so inspired by someone seeing a problem and wanting ot fix it, I'd sure come out and help out if such an event was put on. What a great idea!
What a relief to hear someone see a problem and want to FIX it, not just bitch about it!

DJ Boogie Man, I am with you 100%. Our family of 4 is in whenever you are ready. Ending the day with a great gathering afterwards with a pig pickin is an AWESOME idea! Anything I can do to help, just let me know! I am always picking up trash along the side of the road where we are at the Old Pittsboro Ford lot. God gave us such a beautiful place to live and we shouldn't be trashing it!!!!! As you can tell this is one of my pet peeves.

Bravo Boogie Man! This is exactly the type of community action that we need. I'm in! Pick a day and a neighborhood to start.

I often thought that Siler and Pittsboro should get together and buy a street cleaning machine, both towns could sure use one.

What a great idea DJB! I agree 100% with you. I live pretty far out of town and see an amazing volume and variety of trash on my daily commute. Within the last month, by the side of the road, I have seen: a woman's brown long-haired wig, a complete (top and bottom) zebra-striped bikini swimsuit, multiple discarded Christmas trees, and about a zillion cans, bottles, fast food bags, and other assorted debris. I am so disappointed in people. I have been all over the US (every state except Hawaii) and North Carolina over my lifetime, and we live in one of THE most beautiful areas I've ever seen in this state - and in my own opinion, maybe anywhere! Why people feel the need to throw things from their vehicles, or to dump their trash in remote areas, I will never understand. I have honked angrily at people I've seen do this. If it were up to me, people who are caught littering should have to spend a week of picking up garbage by the road every day, and all they collected should get trucked to their home and deposited on their property so they can see how that feels... I think the OP had a fantastic idea, and I would love for it to see fruition.

Thanks for the 6 responces, I appreciate your support and Kind words. I see 371 folks have viewed the post so I hope to rally around that, So if your seeing this for the fist time please help because we need at least 100 plus to make an impact. I would like Gene to get on board and lets spread the word, I am going to contact the Mayor and city planner next week to see what support we could expect from the city and get some direction.
I will keep everyone up on my efforts and if anyone is networked with city government or the township please let me know.
God Bless you All!

I am in!! I would be happy to help. Let me know when and where! I live in Pittsboro and when we walk into town we often take a couple of plastic bags to collect trash with while walking. It does not fail that the bags are full long before we get home. We have even stopped at the gas station to get more bags.

I walk nearly every day and have always carried a plastic bag with me to keep my road clean. It is an ongoing thing. I agree with everyone that our county is very trashy. Just go by the intersections leading to and from Wal-Mart and it is enough to make a person sick! Would be so nice if people really cared about our county.

I live in Pittsboro and someone in my family makes the rounds of our block and picks up trash almost every weekend. Always plenty of trash to choose from!! From twenty-five years of experience, some trash observations. What we pick up:
Fast food trash. Mostly Hardees. Both people who drive by and people who walk by throw it down. At least it is mostly paper.
Aluminum cans. Beer mostly, but also energy drinks like Red Bull. This one I can never figure out, as they have been recyclable for cash for decades.
Liquor bottles. Again, they are recyclable. Riders toss them so they won't be in the car if they are stopped. Walkers toss them so they won't have them when they get where they are going - usually home.
Plastic bags - there are still many of them and they never - in the sense of during my lifetime - break down.
Styrofoam - from cups to coolers to construction panels.
Over time, I really cannot say there have been any major trends. There is always lots of it and from all of these categories. There was no Hardees trash before the Hardees was there and the construction trash was less before the last decade or so, when there was no development/construction going on in Pittsboro. We long ago got a couple of those gripper sticks and keep a store of plastic bags. We try to recycle the cans and bottles and the rest just goes in our trash.

Sounds like we need to hit up Hardees as a sponsor of this event!

I use the plastic grocery bags wrapped around my tractor hydraulic couplers to keep out dirt. They last maybe a year before they fall to pieces and have to be replaced.
Some people are just pigs. Next to our land the neighboring property was subdivided and the new lots lines cleared. Someone drove a good 800 feet of the road with an tractor or ATV and dumped trash on the cleared lot line. They have to go buy food at Food Lion or Piggly Wiggly so they could easily dropped the trash off at the collection site behind Food Lion. It would have been easier and faster.
We have had people dump used cat litter on our property a couple of times. Drive past the open gate with the no trespass sign and empty Garfield's poo and pee box on our place.
I did see some people collecting cans on Lystra this afternoon.
Later, Dan

Roadways can be adopted for clean up by individuals, families or groups through the NC "Adopt a Highway" program also. I take a bag with me also, when I walk the neighborhood and pick up trash. I don't think it is so much the people living there, as for many years it was non-existent. But since one home "business" appeared, it became more prevalent, just saying. I travel up/down 15-501 a good bit and I'd like to extend thanks to the residents of Fearrington Village for their dedication of clean up along that stretch of highway. It is noticed!
