Okay, so I'm still totally in the dark about this whole redistricting thing.
I am a 7th grade student at Horton Middle School. I have been hearing talk about a new school called Pollard Middle. Many of my friends are telling me that next year, they may be redistricted. I don't know why they have to cut back our HUGE population of 400 students (sarcasm). Seriously, there is more than enough room at Horton. There is even a whole hallway with no classrooms in it.
Why must they remove the fifth graders? There are plenty of middle schools across the nation that include the fifth grade.
http://www.nmsa.org/portals/0/pdf/publications/On_Target/grade_config/grade_config_1.pdfIn addition, the cuts needed to make this change will decrease the educational opportunities available for the students at Horton. Many extracurricular activities will be cut, possibly even band class. Extracurriculars are great for students. They even help a student's grades in some cases. Also, if teachers are cut, this will mean more students per teacher, resulting in less one-on-one time between teacher and student.
I am sure that there is some good reason to make this school. We wouldn't be spending our tax money on something with no reasoning behind it. I would just like to know this reasoning, because I see none.
Sincerely,
Rachel Crawford
