I have 2 dogs that I walk every morning (live in North Chatham wooded gravel road type area) and am aware of the coyotes but have yet to see one. THANK THE LORD!! I am now, however, quite petrified to take my dogs out after reading the above stories. I don't know that my dogs would be as good as mary51802's was when she came upon the 4 at the Haw. It scares me to death to think about running into one. There was a time when you didn't have to worry about seeing them in broad daylight (unless rabid of course) but I guess that doesn't hold true anymore. Do you think I should start carrying my pistol with me while walking? Any tips or tricks for getting away safely or making them flee? (other than backing up and not running-if you haven't dropped from heart failure first) My dogs are not small and I hate to not be able to go out walking with them but I am super scared about these nasty coyotes.  I was just lucky my Weimaraner had some smarts. I think even she knew it was a very bad idea. We have also trained her to take chase signals from us like after a squirrel or a pack of deer. I could not say a word and started backing up. I think she was just imitating me thank goodness. I feel it is very important if you live in the woods to train your dog to command because some things you do not want them to chase. We have wild turkeys I can stop her on. Good luck all !! |

Friday, I saw one standing on the side of Alex Cockman Rd looking at me like "what do you want?" Very large, with teeth as I've never seen before. I had seen a pit bull mix in very spot on the way to work, so not sure if he was hunting. I seriously hope no one is missing a dog in that area. Be aware, he was not afraid of me. Wish I'd had my pistol.

We do not live far from Alex Cockman and 902 (we just moved last month) but have not seen any here yet. Thanks for the notice. Our neighbor advised we get a pistol for foxes and bobcats but never said anything about cayotes. |

The Mojo thread was about guns on public game lands out of season. Special rules apply. I would assume that you can shoot a coyote in your back yard or, for that matter, on the side of the road, with whatever's handy so long as it's legal to own and shoot in the first place.

I was really impressed by the detail about its beautiful hair. for some reason, it makes me totally believe him. I mean, who would expect silky hair on Bigfoot? he noticed that. he must have seen one.
