You'd better reread Snowball's comment and then mine; I quote her/him correctly.

"The public" is individuals and that's exactly what your type keeps losing sight of, along with your education "policy".

So genius - which individual do you want to build educational policy around?  The one that has three square meals a day and caring parents or the one that is lucky to get school lunch and rarely sees his parents?

Quote
You're right about that, 1911, the public IS individuals. Sadly, not all of the public's school kids come to school equally prepared and equally supported. That's why teachers have to make some decisions about what's best for that public's common good.

Amen - of course then 1911a will be mad because we're leaving behind individuals. Of course - he could come and volunteer at a local school to help but that would effort instead of complaining.

Another way to look at the schedule in question is that the students have a lot of free time just before the exam in which to STUDY for the exam.

So the AP population is small and not that many folks are effected.  But everyone is effected by the placement of the break 16 weeks after returning from "winter" break.  Then we come back for 6 weeks of school (not really b/c the last week is exams and a lot of time at the end of school is fluff)

How does that make any sense?  That is one long haul between "winter" and "spring" break for staff,
faculty and students.  The whole point of a spring break is to get a break!! The continuing to tie
the spring break with Easter is archaic and unproductive.  Other schools take their break at the half way point between Christmas and summer.  Wow, that makes sense.  Then you get a day or two off
at Easter.  Wow, that seems to make sense also.

Why the teachers/staff don't speak up about this is beyond me.  I have heard so many complaints over the years about how hard that stretch between winter and spring break is b/c is so long and everyone
gets burnt out.  So what does the BOE do this year, make it ever longer.  CCS needs to shed some
old bad habits and think out of the box.  This is one case where that could be done so easily.

Later starts for the high school is another.

OK everyone - here is your opportunity. The first draft of the 2011-12 calendar is available at http://www.chatham.k12.nc.us/board/meetings/2010-2011/boemtg_01_10_11/Agenda%20Item-BOE%202011-12%20Calendar.pdf. It will be discussed at the school board meeting next Monday, Jan 10 - the meeting starts at 2:30 (after the board retreat). The topic says "With recommended changes from the board, the draft or proposed calendar will be sent to schools and posted on the website for 30 days to get continued feedback from our school communities. After 30 days and the receipt of feedback, a draft calendar will be presented to the board for approval."

So, the clock is ticking. Look at the calendar now. If you don't like it, contact the central office (Mr. Logan's email is rlogan@chatham.k12.nc.us ) or the board
Deb McManus uncdeb@earthlink.net
Gary Leonard gleonard@chatham.k12.nc.us
Flint O'Brien flint@flintobrien.com
David Hamm dhamm@chatham.k12.nc.us
Del Turner dturner@chatham.k12.nc.us

The next board meeting is Feb 14 at 6pm in the Central Office - that's when the calendar will likely be approved.

Remember, nobody can represent anyone. Makes so much sense to have elections.
