Why and how can people just drop off unwanted animals in the countryside?  We now have a yellow tabby lurking around on our land, poor thing, it is very skinny and afraid.  I feel so bad for it.  We can't keep it and bring it in the house, because we already have enough to take care of and wouldn't want my house cat "Puss" to catch any diseases.  I can't feed it outside either because the cat food will attract more critters than we are already dealing with. Then this weekend, I went for a bike ride, and two stray labs were following us.  Luckily, we came up with a plan that worked to distract the dogs so we could get away without them following us home.  That's all we need is two dogs after our birds!

How can people just do that to their animals!  What do they expect?

It is bad to see. So far none out here near Bennett but when we lived in north Chatham on a dead end road there were so many. I visitsed CARE about every month as we had enough too. I guess economic times but I wish people would find another way.

Dazey Mae,

I wanted to say that I agree with you about people who abandon their pets.  I don't understand it at all, it is a cruel thing to do.  I don't think they realize, or care, that they will be afraid, hungry, and in danger.

I wanted to suggest that you don't necessarily immediately label this cat as a stray cat.  Sometimes cats that are lost or have shy personalities get mistaken for dumped animals.  This cat could be afraid and lost, could be why it's thin, there
might be someone looking for him.  It would be good to file a 'found' report with the Chatham County animal shelter, and any other shelter that you might be near, if you are near a county line.  That way they can check it against their lost reports.  Also, check craigslist, it seems to have an active 'lost and found' section.  You could call some of the local vet clinics too as they keep lists of lost and founds that people report to them.

Not sure where you live, but there was an orange tabby reported as lost to CARE months ago.  That owner is still looking for her cat.

There is also a yellowish cat lost on this bulletin board.  Take a look at that photo, under Chatterbox - Lost Cat.  Her cat could be skinny by now and is probably skittish because he was an indoor kitty.  Indoor only cats can appear afraid if they get lost outside.

Finally, if you can't find the owner and want to keep this cat, CARE or the animal shelter both have low-cost spay/neuter programs that make it extremely affordable to get the cat fixed and vaccinated.
