It is coming out from various posts and the Chatham Record that more and more people in the vicinity of the City Tap are complaining about the noise. The record states it was four residents that originally went to the town, not just a renter.

I love live music too but I see their point. They have been living there for years and all is nice and quiet even near town and because some business decides music will benefit their business the neighbors are having it forced on them. I understand there are gripes already that the current BOC is not business friendly but there should be a restriction on where venues that plan to play loud music set up shop.
Same goes for Shakori Hills. My friend bought a house there years ago before the festival even started and now she suffers through it every year. She moved there for the quiet of country living. She says not only does she hear the music but people who are drunk trespass on local land and the drug activity is bothering people.

I know we all love music venues but we need to be more cognizant of where they go up and what is nearby.

"Town Manager Bill Terry said he had received many emails on the matter with the majority siding with the City Tap."

The neighbors stated that it is people who go there for the music but the local nearby houses are saying their input is not be listened to. They should be since there are right there. I could say I support it even from the other side of the county but that should not matter. Location should.

its not like they have music everynight give me a break.  I think the city tap
looks after people close by not playing very late. I think its a very good thing for pittsboro.
we need to stand up for the city tap.

exactly. the local Chatham Record has had 2 items about the 'complaints'. but I think more people like it than don't like it.

if someone lives downtown, 2 hours of music a week is not so bad.

read the chatlist today, did that guy whine enough? his life is shattered:

"West Salisbury Street- A couple of Churches, well kept homes and a
once peaceful atmosphere. Then the City Tap opens and plays loud
music. It shatters the peace and quite of the whole street. The sound
level theory is a joke. The base booming and the twanging is annoying
at anytime, at any level. The City Tap has the right to play music (or
make noise) anytime, as loud as they want, provided  the sound stays
within their walls and environs. They have no right to annoy non
customers with noise. CITY TAP'S LIBERTY ENDS WHERE NEIGHBOR'S RIGHTS
BEGIN. Since the City Tap has an outdoor “beer garden” type of
arrangement, they are naturally going to make sure the folks outside
can hear the music. Screw anyone beyond that, that doesn't  like it.
Of course The General Store and the Brewery support the City Tap-
Those two are noise makers also. It has been said that many support
and are siding with Tap- pray tell, how many of  those that support
the noise maker,  live anywhere near that noise?"

uh, yes, in a down town venue, 2 hours on a Saturday night, within the laws.

any one seen Gene tapping his toes there, lately? at all?

Not that I care either way, but if you go to the City Tap's website, you will see that their schedule shows music 3 nights a week, not 1... Thursday, Friday & Saturday!!  Get your story straight, please!!

Three nights a week, and the music stops at 10pm. Perfectly reasonable for an establishment in town. I suspect these neighbors are less concerned about music and are more concerned about a successful bar near their homes.

Because of possible drunk driving or just because there's drankin' goin' on over there?  If that was the objection, why wouldn't they just say so instead of complaining about the noise-level?

Well if they have babies trying to sleep or do not like the style of music it is a bother. It would be like a neighbor blasting his music if you try to watch TV. Even if it stops at 10.
You try to sit on your porch and have a quiet night of moongazing or something and someone blasting music.

The way I see it is that there are pros and cons to anywhere you live.  When you live way out in the country you have beautiful night skies full of stars without bright lights to turn the sky that sickly greenish-pink.  At my house, there's no one to see everything you do anytime you go out into the yard.  There's lots of space.  It's quiet.  We don't hear road traffic, only airplanes and helicopters flying over.

On the other hand, we spent years stuck with some of the most expensive, slowest internet connections conceivable.  Our DSL is still too slow for youtube half the time.  People want to send all of the garbage from the city out to where you live. Your neighborhood is liable to be targeted as a receptacle for anything that's considered a nuisance for people in town. You are subject to  long commutes, which are to cars what pencil sharpeners are to pencils.   If you forget an ingredient for something you're cooking, it's a long haul to town if the closest gas station doesn't have it.

People who live close to a downtown area like Pittsboro are in a convenient location.  They can walk to stores. They can save a lot of money on gas and they aren't as likely to have to be the people putting 20-30,000 miles a year on their new cars. The more the town grows, the more variety there is within walking distance.  My husband and I enjoyed taking a walk around a big block Saturday night while the band took a break at City Tap.  It was a beautiful night, and it reminded me of times I lived in a city big enough to have some night life, but in neighborhoods safe enough to walk around at night.

This would be a plus for anyone who lived close to City Tap and enjoyed nightlife, but it's a downside for people who want the quiet of country life with the convenience of living in town. Some small towns still roll up the sidewalks at night, but it you want guaranteed quiet, living near a downtown area doesn't offer that guarantee, expecially if the town is in a growth mode.  If there is to be any nightlife in a town, there will be some noise that goes with it. If you've lived in a city or a college town, you know that.

I think that City Tap is trying its best to be an asset to the town, not a detriment.  Good bands drew us there two nights last weekend.

Music outside until 10 a few nights a week isn't all that bad when you consider that there are downsides to anywhere you live. If people decide they can't live with it, well, that's why people decide to relocate.  It happens all the time. People in the country get tired of living so far away and commuting so far, and they move closer to town.  People move to small towns, and then the  towns change until they lose what they liked about the small town.

It's a pretty natural progression, in my opinion.
