The county also has a pool in it's Northwest park which can be rented for groups.  The expansion of the that park to be open full time was a small part of our tax rate increase this year.  I hope the pool is used for county recreation programs as well and not just for special rentals on weekends but that wasn't clear from the presentation I heard on setting the fee schedule for it.

Of course we also have a rather large lake for swimming as well.

No matter where facilities are located they will only conveniently serve those living near them, which is why the county's recreation master plan calls for so many facilities throughout the county.  They want to make sure facilities are not just available but convenient for everyone.

If there is really a market for such a facility someone will build it if there aren't too many restrictions in their way.  If no one is willing to build it there probably isn't a big enough user base so any county project would have to be taxpayer subsidized.

Government's role in such a venture should be to remove as many hurdles as possible for a business (that has determined that there is a market for something like this) can proceed with the greatest chance of success.

Best deal around. Silly to complain about no public pool when we have it!

p.s. I'd like ice skating and a pool for swim teams, too, but this is a huge venture. The Y has been working on the pool thing for years. it will come to pass....eventually. But I don't think it would "pay for itself" for a long long time.l

I'd love an ice rink too. I just bought myself a new pair of skates. But ice making equipment is EXPENSIVE! I don't see a venture like this making money in Chatham county. Hillsborough has had an ice rink for many years. I didn't know the new one is now a government venture.

Wasn't there something built years back in Bear Creek area that was suppose to be a sports arena/entertainment type facility? I know it belly flopped and transgressed into undesired business.

There is a group of folks attempting to build a basketball/volleyball/Soccer/Softball facility in the area. The biggest problem is that such a facility requires a hotel nearby. Thus far that leaves the facility on the Wake or Orange county borders.

The hotels need to be name brand chains or it does not work. The ultimate would be a Hampton.

that is a start. it may be a building block, if a sportplex is really in the works.

a better hotel may come on line. go for it.
