Mass transit, such as light rail or bus rapid transit requires a certainly housing density to be successful (a minimum of 20 homes per acre is needed within ¼ mile of a station and 15 houses units per acre between ¼ and ½ miles from the station). Currently, there are not any areas along US 64 that meet the criteria to support mass transit without substantial redevelopment, which none of the municipalities along the corridor are projecting.

Based on these numbers it would appear that there needs to more population density build up along 15-501 for the a bus from Pittsboro to Chapel Hill to make sense. (I think that's what many of us have been saying all along).

What Chatham County needs to build is bona fide, electrified, six car monorail.

According to the agreement between Chapel Hill Transit and Chatham County and Pittsboro on http://www.chathamnc.org/Modules/ShowDocument.aspx?documentid=13773

CHT is supposed to provide "ridership and route performance data along with every invoice".

Guess, we'll need to request a copy of those.

How the County commissioners see the Pittsboro Express bus -

"A pilot project with Chapel Hill Transit is now in place to demonstrate the potential for ridership from Pittsboro to Chapel Hill, with results, thus far, encouraging."

"Ensure the public transit route between Pittsboro and Chapel Hill is financially viable, effective and efficient; explore options for other bus routes."
