Warning.

The new stop light at the intersection of 751 and O'Kelly Chapel Road is now working (near For Garden's Sake nursery). The good news is that the construction and one-lane traffic is finished. The bad news is that it will take folks a while to adjust to (1) a stop light there and (2) the bad line of sight going north through that intersection. I travel this route to and from work every day. Got to see the first green light going north this morning and the first accident there this evening going back south through it. A young man had run his SUV off the road on the right, apparently by going straight through the intersection, northbound. Unfortunately for him, it curves to the left, and more sharply than it used to, due to the added lane. He looked okay - he was out and on his cell phone - and someone else had already stopped to check. I am sorry that they could not have taken the extra time to take the crown off the middle of that intersection, but I hope they put some guard rails in to keep folks from going too far into the woods.

One of the problems there is that the speed limit is 45 and I travel it and used to every day and no one slows down. There are a bunch of homes and driveways there too and they should slow down as sometimes farm trucks pull out.

People should not be "used  " to areas but always pay attention and be aware. I know it will take folks awhile to adjust to the light but regular commuters have known the light was going up for months. I traveled it too and if you just slow down it is fine.

Get ready for much more construction there too as a friend in Durham told me they will 4 lane 751 in anticipation of the new 1300 home development going up along it.

Patty, I wondered how long it would take for someone to head off through the woods in that curve! It is significantly sharper and worse visibility than before I think. They weren't able to do the improvements the way they wanted to, from what I was told because of a threatened lawsuit with impact on one of the corners of O'Kelly. Few adhere to the 45 mph through there, and those that don't are going to risk going out in that curve.
The development Mary speaks of hasn't been approved yet, but money talks Wink

Thanks for the info about a possible reason WHY they could not fix that intersection while they were adding the new lane. I looked closely going through there this morning and the car left quite a trail of deep ruts. I am amazed it did not roll, as the drop-off is steep. A road worker was there, looking at the ruts and talking on his cell phone, and had put up more traffic cones (the skinny ones). Too bad you cannot see them until it's too late!  And yes, I shudder to think what will happen there if that huge development gets approved.

Hopefully the left turn lane to go onto O'Kelly will improve that risk factor. Also folks needing to turn left coming off O'Kelly onto 751 won't be playing "Russian Roulette" and some of the bad accidents in that area will cease. I see a guardrail in the future for that curve headed North.

Of course it was...just what that road needs another several hundred houses for race car drivers to live in...my son lives near Apex Nursery and it sounds like the pit stop when we are visiting his house, will scare the cr*p out of you trying to get onto 751 especially am and pm rush. Sometimes you really do wonder who is at the helm of this COUNTY.

I will bet it does. With the development going up they will make the road a 4 lane. I bet most houses will try to be sold. I have seen some signs.

Durham County Commissioners are as damn bad as the BOC of Chatham ...just goes to show COMMON SENSE AINT THAT COMMON ANYMORE. How many years will it take for the road to be 4 laned and at what cost...just keep raping the county with no regard to welfare of its citizens.

1,300 homes MamaCash!
I believe 751 has been on the 4 lane long range DOT plan for a long while now, but this may speed that up to a short range plan.
The recent traffic signal etc. at 751/O'Kelly is "antiquated" less than a month of completion!
