waterfowl rehab?

Leroy, our favorite goose, has been injured by "something". He's a big Toulouse. We found him near our pond, not able to walk, even tho he has control of his legs. He has an almost bare area on his lower back, only a few tail feathers left. We have him in a dog kennel, he's eating & drinking, but not as much as he should I think. Doesn't seem to be able to manuver well. Is there anwhere in the area that treats waterfowl? Leroy is such a cool, special bird, eats out of our hands.

Your goose isn't wild, so I don't know if they will be able to help you. But if they don't feel they can, they will know someone who can. They are a great group of folks.

Fox love fowl as well. Large snapper turtles in a pond can cause a lot of damage as well.

thanks for the tips everyone. he seems a bit stronger, we gave him some more room to move around. He's big, but the Toulouse are called a "heavy breed". They are not very fast or graceful. He's pretty funny to watch when he tries to keep up with all the rest when they run back down to the pond. If he doesn't seem improved tomorrow, I'll start making calls. I'm much more hopeful for him today than I was yesterday.

Thanks for the shout out! Girl's family property has the spring that supplies their water! Very few people know about Sylvan Heights, but at least we do! World class operation that,BTW, is also an affiliate of the Zoo. Can't go wrong here. Do you Know Mike and/or Allie?

he seems a bit better. but there's a new problem I didn't think of. where there's a nearly-bald area near the end of his back, the flies got to it & it got ugly. It looked like nothing yesterday except a scrape. I gotta work on that.  He's still not mobile, even tho he can move his legs OK.

Yes, have met Mike, Allie and son Brent. I want to head down to Sylvan Heights when cooler weather arrives. I see on their website some new features added there!

he's definately feeling a bit more perky. He's never been prone to biting. He tolerated me cleaning on the nasty place on his back. But I guess I got too rough & he turned & put his beak to my hand. Then when I had to maneuver him, he "beaked" me a few times, getting a little tougher each time, as if to say "All right now, that's enough!"

i really don't know what would injure him like this. I'm assuming if it was a coyote or something, the damage would be much worse. Is it possible he got into a fight with the other male goose we have? Don't they jump on top & bite the others back? But almost all his tail feathers are gone too. The bald place on his back is in the center between his wings. He's not plucking them.

I'm just very happy he seems to be holding his own. He's a pretty cool bird. Everyone thinks he looks mean, but he's really the nicest of the "herd".

Glad to hear he is holding his own.  I understand where you are coming from on that afront!
