Beginning Wednesday, the 6-8 students at Perry Harrison (PHS) will be housed at Perry Harrison, but will be Margaret Pollard (MPS) students. In January they will join the N Chatham 6-8th graders in the Margaret Pollard building. The PHS art teacher will be moving to MPS, but she had to leave all her art supplies for the PHS students. She would be very appreciative of anything you might have that could be used for art classes for 6-8th graders. This would include any of the below and pretty much anything you can think of as she has NOTHING at this point!
Ideas include, but not limited to ~markers ~crayons ~scissors ~magazines ~paper of all types ~glue ~clay ~tape ~paints ~paint brushes ~storage containers
If you have anything around the house that could be used or you would be willing to donate new items, let me know. I would be glad to stop by and pick them up and get them to school for you. If you prefer to take your donation to PHS, you can mark it for Leah Vigus.
Thanks in advance for your support!

I can't believe they aren't buying any art supplies for the new school! That's crazy!

AC Moore is having some sales now , if folks regularly shop there. It might be worth a few of us buying some things and stockpiling them til January.

It may be that they are buying art supplies for the new school ... but not for the teacher to use BEFORE they're going to the new school. Kind of dumb, but par for the course.

Now I'm confused. Isn't Leah in the same classroom she's had for years this fall? Is the request to say she has no supplies for fall or for spring?

She is in a new classroom on the 6-8 hall until the new building opens. She will be teaching the 6-8 kids and the new K-5 art teacher has Ms. Vigus' old classroom and all her supplies. She needs supplies NOW!

Well, that's just stupid- how are you supposed to teach art with no supplies?? And if she had to provide her own before, why did another teacher acquire them? This is NO way to treat teachers!!!! LAME!!!

Can the teacher petition the PTA for assistance?

The PTA for the new school probably doesn't exist yet. And if it exists in some form, they probably don't have money, since the buy-in to the PTA Thrift Shop is so high. This is what happened at Virginia Cross when it opened, although I can't speak about art supplies specifically as I don't know those details. All the teacher who were going to move over had to make-do, although they were given some money to start. It is really stupid, I agree. Are the other teachers who are to move to Pollard completely without supplies, books, etc? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

At open house last night we were told that the school system is broke, starting out with less than last year and even though there were not layoffs some positions were not renewed. Being the Pollard Middle is in a more affluent area then VCE would it be worthwhile to petition local businesses and even ones in CH for donations of supplies in exchange for some sort of recognition?

even though there were not layoffs some positions This is off-topic and I know you're just repeating what you were told, but this is not true. 7 teacher assistants were laid off in the form of media assistants. Next year will be even worse - millions and millions of dollars worse. It's very depressing.

Aren't school employees under contract renewals each year and basically receive an offer letter to come back?

I guess. But how is not getting a letter b/c of budget cuts not a layoff? I guess I think of a layoff=cut position. So maybe I mis-wrote. The fact is there are less positions in the schools this year than last, and there will be even fewer next year.

I think the "layoff" positions were offered other positions so they did not lose jobs, but were put in other positions..

From what was said at board meetings, there were positions eliminated (specifically 7 media assistants, as well as some non-school based positions). Open positions (retirements, etc.) meant that no people were laid off, though people in the eliminated positions were reassigned to where there were openings. Some people may have decided they didn't want the new assignment and left the district instead.
The board had wanted to give principals the flexibility to choose which assistant position to eliminate, but direction from the state (save classroom positions) dictated that all of the eliminated assistant positions were in media centers.
Pollard PTSA exists - Clay Revels is the president. They have almost no money. I think the suggestion to ask businesses for donations is a great one.
