Barry Hayes mentioned this morning that Randy Voller is pushing for a skateboard park using County funds, can anybody elaborate on this?

Great! More taxpayer funds up in smoke.
How about we get the graduation rate up at the schools, and maybe the overall achievement level before creating yet one more excuse not to do homework?
Why not rally a group of skateboarders and have them raise the funds to build the park? Bake sales, car washes, mowing lawns, delivering groceries.... What's so wrong with having the kids put some sweat equity into it as well?
Between responsibility, pride of accomplishment, pride of "ownership", self-sacrifice, long-term planning... what's not to like for the kids?
And if they're not willing to work on it, they don't deserve it. Uncle Sam is broke, and so is Uncle Taxpayer. What better lesson to learn really quick in life?
One more thing: Let me guess where the "ideal" "central" location for such a park would be? Somewhere near Chatham Forest, perhaps?

Didn't we get the Pittsboro Express so that the kids could go to Chapel Hill to skateboard? Magic bus, Magic bus by Lyle Estill at lyle@blast.comhttp://www.chapelhillnews.com/2009/03/04/43791/magic-bus-magic-bus.html My eldest son's first sentence was "I want to ride the bus." When you live in the woods of Chatham County that's a tall order. The idea of a bus somehow lodged in his imagination, probably from a book or a song or something, and once there it was all we heard about for weeks. I finally met his demand by adding an extra hour to an airport run so that we could board the shuttle bus and take a pointless loop around the terminals. When it became known to the driver, and the handful of passengers that this was a "first bus ride," everyone joined in the event. And we were able to take one item off his "life list." Nowadays he still wants to ride the bus. As he enters his teenage years he is a skateboarder enamored with fashion, and stickers, and everything that goes with that. Which means on gray winter days he is able to enumerate many reasons why living on a gravel road in the woods in unacceptable when he could be roaming the shops and grinding on the curbs of Chapel Hill.

I mean that. so maybe the bus is premature. I do think it is a fine idea who's time is not here yet. an extra van or 2 for the Chatham Co. Transit system is a good idea, though. but isn't Lyle tight with the Randy Voller? maybe I am wrong, and my conspiracy radar is off, but maybe not. anyhow, a skate park would be a good thing, and a lot cheaper than the bus.

If Pittsboro wants it than they should fund it, not the County. Will people in Bennett benefit from it? Siler City? Moncure? No, Pittsboro will.

Aren't people on this board always complaining there aren't enough recreational activities for the kids? You can't win around here...

No, it is a big County and IMO people don't want to travel that far to watch kids skateboard.

What about the liability for injury?
I think you over exaggerate people traveling all over the county. With 65% of Chatham residents working out of county and the necessity for 2 incomes in a family people don't have the time to transport children everywhere. We limit our kids to the amount of extracurricular activities they can be involved with. I would not travel the 45 minutes each way to a skateboard park in North Chatham from Western Chatham, I would tell them to find another activity closer to home.

It is a recreational facility and isn't there a parks and recreation department? If there is a big enough demand for it then re-allocate some of those funds from another activity that may not be as popular.

Here is a facebook link for the group trying to bring this Skate Park to Pittsboro. http://www.facebook.com/photos.php?id=107514395935463#!/pages/Pittsboro-NC/Future-Pittsboro-NC-Skatepark/107514395935463 and http://pittsboroskatepark.com/ (this is my first time posting a link so I dont know it it will work.) From what I understand, it is this group who is working with the town of Pittsboro, not the county, to try and get this built. Would of been nice when I was a kid getting chased all around Pittsboro by the cops for skating in empty parking lots....

Hello All. My name is Tony and I'm 36 year old father, working professional, skateboarder and tax paying citizen of Pittsboro and Chatham County. I brought the need of a skatepark to the attention of Mayor Voller and Parks & Rec. Parks and Rec supported my idea but said there is currently no funding in the budget. Fine. If you drive through Pittsboro you have to be blind to not notice the teenagers skateboarding. There's no argument. In fact there are only more skaters. We build baseball fields, basketball courts, soccer fields, tennis courts and all other types of recreational outlets for our youth and adults. Why not a skatepark. The added benefit of a well built and designed skatepark is that people will travel from all over the state and east coast to skate the park and help bring some extra revenue to the city. Ball fields and tennis court are all the same from city to city. They have dimensions and do not differ. All skateparks are unique and skaters like to skate different terrain. This may be hard for some of you to understand, but the facts are out there that well built skateparks bring visitors to your town. As of today (8-31-2010) the city or county has not spend a single dime on the skatepark. However, I spent my after tax money on 100 skateboards that I'm donating all of the proceeds to research and drawings for a skatepark. I have some students and teachers that are helping to sell the boards at the local schools and generate interest. If you would like to purchase a skateboard for $50 you can email me directly at tony@pittsboroskatepark.com. Below is the picture of the board. Thanks for your support.

But again if it is for Pittsboro they need to fund it. Pittsboro is 28 miles from Bennett and kids here cannot get after school transport to PBO. Most are 2 income families with afternoon sitters. If the COUNTY funds it why not build it more central like in the Siler City area?
Siler is 15 miles from PBO about 12 from many other small towns here. But if PBO which is far for most they should fund it.
