Chatham County Schools had a smooth start on its first student day of the 2010-2011 school year today.  Our 17 schools operate on a traditional schedule.  We are running 87 buses this year (3 less than last year due to route consolidations as we continue to look for ways to absorb state budget cuts).  Today we had 7604 students in kindergarten through 12th grade.  This number is 88 more than the number of students we had the first day of school last year, but we attribute some of that to the change in the kindergarten age requirement that went into effect last year and gave everyone across the state less kindergarteners than is typical.  We anticipate our student numbers to increase overall the next few days.

I'm glad to hear that. I'll be interested to see if the growth was concentrated in any particular school. I assume those numbers will come in after day 10.

Enrollment is reported each day for the first 10 days, then at the end of each month (month = 20 school days). http://www.chatham.k12.nc.us/central_office/instructional_services/accountability_ncwise/nc_wise/index.html

Day 1 = 7604
Day 2 = 7722
Day 3 = 7740

Last year
Day 1 = 7516
Day 3 = 7636
Day 10 = 7672
Day 20 (Month 1) = 7683
Month 9 (end of school) = 7591

2008-09
Day 1 = 7501
Day 3 = 7704
Day 10 = 7731
Day 20 (Month 1) = 7727
Month 9 (end of school) = 7524

Last year enrollment was down because of the plant closings in Siler City and because the deadline for kindergarten entry was earlier.
Kindergarten Day 3 2008-09 = 659
09-10 = 580
10-11 = 671

Most schools are up or down <15. Siler City Elem is +28, JM is +19
North Chatham/Perry Harrison/Pollard are +77 (Pollard numbers come from both NC and PH, so I can't determine it by school).
