I'll probably vote for Munn, but would feel better about it if I knew she'd had some public school experience. Haven't heard about that.
My sons attended Pittsboro, Horton and Northwood from 1986-2000 and Woods from 1999-2008, so I actually had kids in the CCS schools much longer than the charter schools. My oldest graduated from Northwood in 1999 and the younger ones from Woods in 2006 and 2008. I worked as an assistant running a computer lab/study center and social studies teacher (and debate team assistant coach) at Chapel Hill High. I also taught social studies at a private school in Raleigh one year.

I think there is some concern over a perceived bias towards charter schools.

Thanks, Munn, for your swift reply. Let me double-check my understanding. You were a social studies teacher (as opposed to assistant teacher) at CHHS? When was that?

No bias at all on my part. Charter schools are just a different ballgame. They don't answer to a district school board.

Really? Why's that?

I think if you have to ask you're probably not very interested in the answer.

Snowball, I would have to get out my old resume to check the dates but I think assistant (running the computer lab/study center on my own) in 1985-6, taught in Raleigh in 1986-7, taught part-time and ran the computer lab/study center the rest of the day 1987-89.

I have been reading about educational methods and policy since I was a teenager. If you're on Facebook, join my group Mia Munn for Chatham Schools - I post links to articles I've read, book suggestions, my reaction to local and national events in education.

I enjoy, applaud and appreciate your study and postings. I am aware of your private school position. I don't need to know exact dates, so I will restate, clarify and extend my question. Approximately when were you a social studies teacher (had full responsibility for that class?) in Chapel Hill (plus or minus 10 years)? Certified teacher at the time?
Thank you.

One other thing is Mia is a top notch Scout Leader, she trains other leaders and participates in many Scouting events. Even when injured at a recent activity she had a smile on her face and kept on going. Mia is a true leader.

For some reason or another - this line of questioning seems to border on a "hidden agenda".  May not be, but why question certification?  How many board members (past and present) have been "certified" to  teach?  Currently - Hamm and Leonard.  Members of the school board have many different backgrounds/professions/agendas - so I don't get why her certification is a criteria for being a qualified candidate.

Snowball is fishing, obviously.

That just goes to show how difficult of a time they are having finding fault with Mia.  Her dedication is unquestionable and so too is her knowledge.

No hidden agendas, folks. I'm just trying to get a bead on the candidate's length and intensity of public school teaching experience. I hope to receive a clear answer to that question.  It's important to me that someone who aspires to help run a school system has more than a few months of experience within one. It's certainly not my sole criteria for a vote.

I don't know. I've looked at the school board page on the CCS website. Two of the incumbents have posted their bios. Deb has not.

No bias? You just can't get past that charter school thing, can you?

BTW, I think each charter school has it's own board and charter schools still fall under the jurisdiction of the NC Department of Public Instruction. Mia?
