Per WRAL breaking news there is another explosion on a gulf oil rig. No deaths but injuries. They have no news yet on what company but it is west of the BP rig.

Sound fishy to me, why are these well doing this? One I can see, two makes me wonder if an outside force is responsible.

I think it is just bad, old equipment and lack of oversight and regs. That is what happened to the 3 companies from BP's.

Awful coincidental... especially because I would imagine that every oil company double checked their equipment when the BP rig went...

Here is something I just found. Not too much but it belongs to a Houston oil company and is at Grand Isle La.

It's not a drilling rig; it's a platform with an established well in (relatively) shallow water - 340'.

Pointless posting another link when they're both AP reports.

This offers more detail on the platform's function. Pretty low production, a good bit of storage. Sounds like the fire is not with a well itself, but from barrels stored there.

Some of the barrels must have exploded as they are saying from the air there is a mile long slick.

I said that because all the news are calling it a rig. I am not an oil worker so sorry.

Neither am I an oil worker and I am attempting to discover the proper nomenclature.  Your description was per the article and, as so, the emphasis was not meant to ding you, but in the interest of clarity.

Okay, for anybody who is interested, my industry source advises:

"An offshore drilling rig is designed to just drill wells (and all that goes with that), and then it moves off location.  A production platform is designed to operate wells, primarily, and will normally be on location for the productive life of the field.  A production platform may also have a rig on it, either permanently or from time to time.  These are cleverly called "platform rigs."  They may actually drill primary wells, sidetracks or just do mostly workover operations of various sorts.  Platform rigs can be moved from one platform to another, but only by boat or barge.  An offshore drilling rig is essentially it's own barge, although it usually will have to be towed to a new location.  Production platforms can range from the small and simple to the massive and complex, and at the upper end, can include extensions for living quarters, seperation facilities, etc."

Judging from that, in the case of today's equipment, it seems it's a production platform.

It has my attention. Let us watch closely for number three.
