Is this really the type of person we want representing us on the County Commission?  I mean, a man who is actually willing to reach out to his former opponent?  I think this kind fence riding is beneath the character of any man who would lead others. Can any of you really think this is GOOD for our community?

Actually, I do think that this is a good idea, and not necessarily fence sitting on Tom's part. Tom is reaching out to differing viewpoints ... this one happens to be a conservative from the west who also happened to be one of the original members of the Strategic Plan Development Committee that crafted the adopted Strategic Plan. I believe Karl may have a great deal to offer, but I will guarantee he will speak his own mind. If we are going to work together for the future of Chatham we need to include even those with whom we might disagree.

If we all agree on everything, then all but one of us is necessary ...

Hope so ...    Wink

I think it was pretty smart politically speaking.  Since they removed six people from the board with opinions and knowledge that they do not approve of, having one man there will likely not hurt them and gives them some political cover to the inevitable charge of packing the board.

I would suggest that the BOC did pack the board with folks that share their vision. I don't think they've made any secret about that. That is what they said they intended to do. Therefore, I do not believe putting Karl on the board was a political move, but rather one to move us forward with diverse points of view that would be productive for a change.

Why would Karl Ernst want to be on a board where most people probably will not agree with him.  Maybe he has always been coalition???

I am having trouble following the math here.  They put people on the board that share their vision and put Karl on the board because they don't want someone that shares their vision.

Vanderbeck did what he was told to do by George the man because George the man is in control of the entire board.  If you don't believe me,just go to the board meetings and watch this man do his dog & pony tricks. Vanderbeck was told to appoint Ernst because Ernst will obey and perform his tricks as commanded.

I thought Jeffrey Starkweather was in control of the county?  Now it's George?

You obviously don't know Karl.

Karl does share the vision in a strategic plan for the County. But that does not necessarily mean he will be in lock-step with everything [pick one ... Board, George, Jeffrey, or any other monarchial despot] wants him to do. It's not 'you're either for me or agin' me' ... Chatham's future is more complex than that.

Frankly, this is tiring ... cynicism and sarcasm are great tools if you wish to sit on the sidelines and snipe at those with whom you disagree ... it's much more difficult to be in the game. Of those on this board, and in this conversation ... anyone serving on a County board or committee? Anyone being denied that opportunity? Anyone???   Huh

Sweet-

I find your comments about George Lucier very offensive.  You obviously don't know the man.  He's the most qualified, intelligent, CARING person to hit that board in many years.  Time will tell.
