I am new to the area and curious about no liquor by the drink. I have read comments about it and talked with locals about it and it seems most people I have talked with would like to see it go away. If it’s not too much trouble, could you help understand the story with it? Who are the proponents for keeping it alive? Do you think it will change anytime soon? Thanks in advance. Kerri

Personally, i am in favor of removing this limit. There is some debate about increased accidents. However, who really believes that beer drinkers have less accidents than someone who wants a pina colada?
Do wine drinkers have fewer accidents than people who like rum and coke? (Actually, I prefer Captain Morgan and diet coke, not that you asked)
This limitation has a major negative impact on business. We desperately need more business in the area and the shortage of restaurants choices locally is silly. Some think that removing this limit would encourage more restaurants to build here.
Businesses like always would have accountability for their practices. If they serve someone so many drinks that he is not in control when he leaves, then they risk being sued. Licenses can also be revoked. Accountability could be maintained and still allow this. I understand Granville county has just changed their law to allow liquor by the drink. Why couldn't we?

Agreed with what's been posted. My understanding is that this may be a ballot initiative this year.
Well, that's what I heard last year...it could be the equivalent of the Cubs' "wait until next year" mantra.

It will be on the ballot this year and based on posts on this BBS seems to enjoy strong support from many who tend to disagree on other issues.
My take is that having liquor by the drink will enhance our quality of life and help stimulate the economy.
Believe me, when this passes you will see nightclubs open in Pittsboro - a solid step toward revitalizing our downtown.

I don't understand how this law works. They sell liquor by the drink at Fearrington, do they get a special exception?

I think people who are going to drive drunk are going to do so whether they do it in chatham county or one of the surrounding counties.

so if we don't sell liquor by the drink, do you think nobody drives in Chtham Co after a drink? Hate to tell you, they just drive farther on the roads b/c they go to Wake Co, Durham Co or Orange Co and spend their money to eat at places where they can buy a drink with their dinner then drive to their home in Chatham Co. Not selling liquor by the drink will not, unfortunately, stop drunk driving. And like others have said, a beer can cause a person to become drunk just like a rum and coke or pina colada can if enough is ingested.
I personnally would welcome a place to eat where i can get a drink wtih dinner without driving to Durham, Orange or Wake Co.

This is another great argument for developing walkable communities (in this case within Pittsboro), so patrons of these establishments can walk to them and not have to drive.

We live in Wake County (will be moving to Chatham later this year), and have been here for 20 years.
We have liquor by the drink here, and have since before we moved here from Wilmington, where they also have liquor by the drink.
I do pay attention to the news story when there is a crash where alcohol was involved, and it seems to me that it is just as or even more likely to be someone driving after consuming alcohol at home or at a party at someone's house as it is at a club or restaurant.
Normally, if someone has a crash over here and they were coming from a bar or restaurant, they will mention that was the case. Seems like here in Wake County, it is usually people coming home from very late night partying, or from a party or making a "beer run."
As already mentioned, it doesn't matter whether it's beer or wine or a Long Island Iced Tea. They all have the same end result, and people shouldn't be drinking and driving - no matter where they do it.

Great view, take something away from everyone because a few people abuse it.

Hey, it's a lot of fun to drink liquor in Carrboro and then race home down 15/501. It will be even better when we get some more traffic to pass!

Liquor by the drink goes along with good restaurants. I would welcome the law change.
