About the Horton Redistricting Issue....
Only a few from Horton will speak out, but my personal opinion is that ALL students coming from the NC and PH would be too disruptive, not to mention the transportation issue. I would support adjusting district lines, but a large crowd of angry families will not help any school. What about Moncure?
There are more than enough students living within the Horton district. We need to "ATTRACT" families, so everyone can benefit.

Are student? going to NC or PHS out of district? Whats the big deal about sending kids to Horton from Bynum? Is it really that long of a bus ride? Short of them getting stuck in the awful traffic outside Northwood in the morning, that is.

It's not going to happen anyway. There is already too much disention by the mere mention of moving anyone. The district lines that were drawn by the old adminstration are WRONG.. They did favors and just plain didn't think it through. The growth has changed the districts and now the BOE has got to make it right. They will probably wait until the new high school/middle school are completed to do anything. And in the meantime PHS and North Chatham will creep towards 1000 and Northwood to 1300-1400. A serious mess.

When I said there are more than enough students witin the Horton district, I was referring to the fact that the school served over 600 students just after PH opened. The district lines have not changed.

I dont have that information, but my observation is that families either moved to another county or chose other options: charter schools, other public schools (transfers), private schools, home schooling, etc.

So there's NOT necessarily plenty of students left in the current district. It would be interesting to find out for sure if Horton is half empty because of moving, or families that have made other choices. It would certainly seem the solution is different depending. Either way, overcrowding at PHS and NCS could certainly be relieved by redistricting, no?

the district lines changed, but apparently the population within the district has. the community changed and the district lines DIDN'T, thats the whole problem. the districts need to be adjusted so that one school is not SO extremely under capacity while others are SO far over it. We're not talking about a small imbalance here.
if you have kids at Horton you need to be aware that they are short-changed by the low enrollment there. if Horton had a higher enrollment it would receive more media and technology funds, more funds for the arts and more teacher allotments allowing for more choice in electives. Transferring ALL of the middle schoolers from the North side of the county to Horton would be a bad move for a lot of reasons, but redistricting SOME of them seems like a no brainer.
Also, what about Moncure? Are you saying some students could be redistricting there as well?

The students at Moncure deserve the same opportunities. If district lines are adjusted to benefit the Northwood feeders, Moncure should not be left out.

I agree, but Moncure also has a lower capacity than Horton. It is currently under capacity but not as dramatically.

The redistricting idea is not without merit. Everyone should attend the BoE meetings to let them know how you feel! It could relieve some of the problems while the new schools get built - at the same time helping Horton and Chatham Central. It seems to make some sense. Has anyone had any experience with the administrators at Horton? The principal and vice principal are two of the best, maybe THE best principals in the county. The kind to make our schools proud. Interested, involved, caring, innovative, really proactive with the students. Any student would be lucky to attend Horton - a far cry from days past.
