This is great news.  If you are willing to share, how were you selected? Maybe Logan is following the advice of the Godfather - "Keep your friends close and you enemies closer"

I don't know what Mia thinks, but I'd be surprised if Mr. Logan thought she was his "enemy." She's well-informed, participates, and doesn't usually go off half-cocked, which is more than can be said for a lot of his critics.

I hope Mr. Logan doesn't see me as an enemy, since we both want to improve education in the county, but our relationship has not always been concordant.

There was a budget advisory committee, but from what I understand (from both what Mr. Logan said at the first meeting, and from a parent participant last year), there was not a lot of advising. The communication was mainly from the administration to the committee members. Mr. Logan stressed that this year will be different, and he will be asking us for input. I take him at his word.

This is from the "heads up" letter to the commissioners:

"The challenge for the board of education will be to reduce spending within these four
funds by $6,158,566. If the board does not wish to touch salaries or benefits and they
cannot reduce funding to charter schools, the only places to cut will be in the contracted
services, supplies and materials and equipment areas.
These areas include utilities and
fuel budgets totaling $3,451,091 and the risk portfolio totaling $326,308." S. Little and Logan

He is setting the tone of the discussions. It needs to be separated into teaching, (TAs and teachers), vs. other staff. Not materials vs. people.

Only 62% of the people who make up the Chatham County School System TEACH!, (Teachers and TAs). I sure would love to know how that breaks down money wise. Especially with those huge saleries at the top.

Budget advisory committee is tomorrow (Thursday 2/23) at 3:30 in the board room. It is an open meeting. One document has been posted at http://board-of-education.chatham.k12.nc.us/modules/locker/files/group_files.phtml?gid=2348954&parent=15565592&sessionid=937af20ecea3a0acf818f4717bf439a4 and another has been sent out to committee members (and should be posted tomorrow).

The plan is to break into small groups and start developing a list of potential cuts.
