Leah Friedman, Staff Writer

PITTSBORO - Politics, flying squirrels and manure don't have much in common, unless you subscribe to the Chatham Chatlist.

The daily electronic mailing list is part gossip column, part 411 and part classifieds.

And Chathamites are eating it up. Nearly 2,300 people make up this virtual community -- that's almost the entire population of Pittsboro.

Gene, 46, is the man behind the list. He created it in 1997 as a one-page Web post, hoping neighbors would talk over it like a back fence.

Nice article, but Gene, that photo doesn't do you justice. Appears to me that you've lost weight since that was taken -- or is it the Botox? **kidding**!

I think Leah is trying to recover after swimming in the slime she jumped into after reporting personal emails as news a few weeks ago.

Gene, I've said it before but I'll say it again.  The chatlist and this board offer a real service to folks in Chatham.  Thank you!

The chatlist and this bulletin board are just two of Gene's contributions to this county.  Check out every entry he shows at the end of the chatlists.  Get a copy of his Chatham Journal monthly newspaper.  Check out some of his first rate sports photographs.  Those for openers.  Watch him work at civic events as well.

Yes, Gene is talented in a number of areas and we are fortunate he is a Chathamite.

Hey, maybe he'll even consider running for School Board again the next time around....if he has any time to spare. Huh

I'll add my 2¢. I think the photos and video Gene so kindly posted to the bulletin board and featured on the cover of the Journal were a BIG factor in the 2 sell-out performances we had at Beauty & the Beast last weekend. It was super for the kids and a great show of community support for the tremendous efforts of the Northwood arts ed. faculty & students involved in the production. I sent press release info to all area local papers, but Gene really stepped up and got out the word! Bravo!

Gina -

I was happy to showcase what our county kids can do.

My wife and I took our daughter on Friday night and we all enjoyed the production.
