Hello-

I have noticed since moving to my little piece of the subs here in Pittsboro that on garbage day, very few people in my large neighborhood recycle.  I’m curious, is it curbside pick up of recycling is a relatively new program; old habits diehard; or perhaps my neighborhood is an anomaly?

I certainly don’t intend to come off as judgmental but I am curious as to the resistance.

Now, off to gas up the SUV (little joke there).

Maybe if the others see you do it they'll follow your example.

Not knowing what your neighborhood is, it would be hard to say.  In our neighborhood there is no curbside pickup of recycling available.  Perhaps some of your neighbors are doing as we do, we truck our trash and recyclables to the county waste sites ourselves so you would not see them sitting by the curb.  (Oops, no curbs in my neighborhood. Hard to have curbs on a dirt road.) Smiley

Not in my neighborhood. I can say that out of all the houses on my street and the blocks of houses around me that I am the only one who recycles at all. My neighbors use their recycle tub to take their clothes to the laundry.  I got to believe the Waste Management truck that comes around has to pray that I stop so they want even come to this side of town.

In the long run ,it will cost all taxpayers more to get rid of the trash . We all need to keep cost down by recycling . Chatham will have to build a landfill an in who's back yard are they going to build it. I bet one thing it will be put where the poor live.

I miss the convenience of having curbside recycling but happily haul all recyclables to the county site at Cole Park.  As a matter of fact, it's better in many ways.  When we lived in Heritage Hills we couldn't recycle "everything" with the curb pick-up.

We now have several bins on our side porch and when one or more is full we "go to the dump."  I also like the fact that the "sharing shed" is there so usable items can be "recycled."

Don't worry, with the new LTT we'll be able to set up a county-wide recycling plan for people like you who are too lazy to drive to one of the county trash centers and drop off there recyclables.

Our family collects our recyclables in a separate bin in our garage and we take them to the trash center along with our regular trash.

We don't make a big deal about it. We don't make a big "look at us, we recycle" show of it. And we aren't preachy or judgmental about it.

Well you do. I wonder why? Where did you move from?

Actually that sounds like a good plan that might actually conserve more energy than each of us individually going to the dump and make it easier for all to recycle.  Unfortunately with 85% of the Land Transfer Tax promised for the Chatham County schools, I doubt there would be money for it from the LTT as they need to upgrade water and sewage with the other 15%.

Your feel-good option costs more and really does NOT conserve energy.

I combine the garbage and recycling with a trip to do other things.

And don't worry about that promise on the 85%. Its only operative for the moment. The day that they decide something else is more important it will change. It happened on the water deal, it will happen on this.

I know we can pay for pick-up on our street (as we are out of town limits), and a few people do - and I see the good ole recycle bins.
Seeing as when the "dump" as we call it (behind food lion) is packed to the gills on the weekends, and  1st stop for all is the recycling - I'd say most of us do recycle. I personally hate having to pitch the garbage bags into the compactor - so we have and always will recycle.
Heres the snobby part - I am from the north east - you know one of those old citys, one of the big 'uns, and we had to buy "garbage stickers" (what praytell are those!) you needed to have a Bright green sticker on each bag o' trash, and it costs any where from .50 -  1.50 depending on the city.
So guess what?
People recycled, a heck of a lot - and Guess what - you never ever EVER EVER saw a soda can, or bottle littering the streets,(or beer can/bottle) because why? - OH YES, 5 cent redemption, yes, tricky huh.

Different areas deal with the problem in different ways, and well, it all has to be dealt with. If your conviction is that your neighbors are not recycling, ask them, chances are they haul thier own recycling down to the county waste sites. (because they can!) If not start your own recycling crusade, and while your at it, maybe we can have more that plastics #1 - and milk containers recycled... that'd be super.

Not sure where that comes from, friend. Laziness has nothing to do with it.  Its a service made available to me that take advantage of - if it were not made available, I'd happily drive to the recycling centers.  Have a nice day.

Thank you for saving us an unneccesary tax increase. See you at the dump.

And let me guess - One of the reason you moved down here was because of the lower taxes. You pay how many thousands of dollars less per year in property taxes?

We have been hearing that we have to raise taxes to meet the new services that new people moving into the county demand. My response is let these new people buy and pay for these services from the private sector.

What's with picking a fight?  I simply asked about the lack of recycling and I clearly stated perhaps I don't know all of the story.  You have no idea about my situation and for your edification, I pay more in taxes now.  But that's not the point.  It was a simple question, not an attack.  A forum is for discourse, correct?  There's no reason to attack me when I was simply curious about something.  Others provided insight, which I appreciated, and that's the end of the story.  Again, have a nice day.
