thanks. this* is a problem.
I took my offspring out of school because of the old guard, i hope things improve. they had looked better for a while, then that woman did her thing, chosen by the old board. it is so frustrating. one step forward, you hope for another.

*by this, I mean the potential split in the election.

Belle - Just to clarify - Is this the "old guard and old board" you are talking about?

I have just sent this introduction to Karen Heilman for distribution to the Perry Harrison PTA.

Thank you for the opportunity to introduce myself to the Perry Harrison School community.

My name is Mia Munn and I am a candidate for the Chatham County School Board in District 1. I am a former teacher and life-long student of educational policy and curriculum. My deeply held beliefs about education are expressed by a new research and advocacy organization, Common Core www.commoncore.org : “Basic skills are essential, but they’re not enough. Children must be knowledgeable in addition to being skilled.” Over the past 22 years, while my children attended Pittsboro Elementary School, Horton Middle School, Northwood High School, and Woods Charter School,  I have focused my attention on their schools and their activities. Now that my youngest son is graduating from high school this June, I have the time to devote my energies to making the Chatham County Schools successful for all our kids.

Three main principles guide me:
1.   Make decisions based on research. We must make decisions in all areas based on data not on emotion. We need to learn from effective schools by adopting proven best practices and successful programs, then giving those programs the resources they need to succeed here in Chatham County. We need to constantly evaluate how we are doing as administrators, teachers and students, then use that data to continually improve.
2.   Identify problems early, then implement solutions quickly. This applies at the level of the school board, in identifying where new schools are needed and building those schools before there is a crisis. It applies at the school and classroom level, in identifying students who are struggling or at risk for failure then giving them intense remediation before they fall farther behind.
3.   Focus on the child in the classroom. The bottom line for every decision we make in the Chatham County Schools should be “will this help the student in the classroom learn and succeed?” If the answer is no, we should not be spending money.

My highest priority is ensuring all students receive quality instruction with a proven curriculum. That means we must recruit, mentor, and retain good teachers, and give them the resources they need to be successful in teaching our students. I also want to ensure that all students in all our schools have sufficient, safe facilities. Lastly, I want to improve communication throughout the school system, within individual schools, between teacher and parents, and with the larger community.

I want to hear your concerns and priorities. You call me at 542-5338 or email me at miamunn4chathamschools@earthlink.net . Or, you can post your comments to a wider audience on two threads on the Chatham Bulletin Board:

What do you think are the biggest issues facing the school board (2008-2012)?
