My son, a junior, was never even told the financial benefits of passing the AP exam, as it relates to note having to take required classes at college. I just think there needs to be some MORE information coming from somewhere.
thats too bad. When Trifaro taught AP History there he told us about a million times a semester how he had to put himself through college driving the ambulance and how AP exams saved him a ton of money.

I guess I dont' really consider taking the exam without the class an "option," so much as an anomaly that the occasional child who took a class somewhere else (like TIP) may want to try.

Great Gene. Love the graphic.
It is just that sort of out of the box design and approach to teaching....where kids aren't sitting in desks all day being lectured....that I was hoping we see the BOE embrace with any of the new schools. Alas, getting out of the rut is hard for some.
Just like the calendar. Not only do we still have a calendar controlled by the seasons, but the tourist lobby got it's two cents also.
And thats why yesterday I did not vote for June Atkinson for Superinendent.

About half the guys at my fraternity did this. As well as skipping the 4th in a series and going straight to AP (such as in foreign language)
There are these kids out there. And they should know ALL their options. Even if it is just a handful.
PS. These anomalies would not be mine.

ideally you're right meg, but in reality we have a guidance department that is severely over-burdened. its up to parents to share information and pick up the slack whether or not we think they should have to. maybe someday we can have a better system with either more guidance counselors or well-trained advisors among the faculty so that each kid gets more personalized advice.

Northwood High School is, by far, Chatham Countys biggest embarassment. And there is not enough being done to change that.

uh, no, I think the several tons of marijuana that dissapeared out from under the nose of the sherriffs department a few years ago is by far our biggest embarassment.

As far as the guidance department at NHS, they are very nice, but they need to realize they could be the reason someone is denied admission to college. Have you ever noticed on the transcripts that there is a category for Awards, Honors, etc. This space is left blank with the comment "no awards or honors for this student". I questioned it and was told NHS has never filled that part of the transcript out. I suggested that the whole category be deleted from the transcript because it does not look good. I'm sure nothing has been done about it. I suggest looking over your child's transcript every year to make sure it is correct.

That's a good point, it probably does look bad to have the category but have it be blank. It should either be filled out or deleted!

no offense but every teenager I know says things like that about their own school. With a little perspective you'll see that Northwood has issues that need addressing but it is not the trainwreck you think it is at the moment.

I give tell you the names of a lot of kids who took AP exams at Woods for classes they didn't take, and passed with flying colors.

I don't doubt it, particularly in a small school like woods that offers challenging courses but may not have enough faculty to offer an "AP" and an honors. I'm not denying it's done, I just don't think it's normal, and I dont' think it's a good idea, necessarily, to encourage students to do it. I think it's the exception and not the rule, and it's not something that comes up in the normal course of school-home communication.
