FINAL COPPER UPDATE:  I'm sorry to say that Copper was never found.  We did our best to try and find him...I even tried to contact a pet detective in the area thanks to some who responded to my posting.  Thanks again to everyone who responded with such kind words and stories.  He was a very loved pet and we will miss him forever! May 16th, 2008

Hi, I have a dog that my husband and I have been keeping alive for the past year after he was poisoned with the tainted dog food that was recalled.  He has kidney failure and we found out yesterday that we have to put him down.  This morning he went out the front door to pee and never came back.  So far we have been looking for over 2 hours with no luck.  HE HAS NEVER GONE OFF, and it may be he went off to die, but he is also confused in his state and we can't bare to think he is lost and can't find his way home.  He's 10 years old about 38lbs...very skinny.  His name is Copper and he is also copper colored.  He actually looks like a little dear and that's also what's making it so hard to find him in the woods.  He would be around the ALSTON CHAPEL ROAD/ROUNDTOP HILL ROAD AREA in PITTSBORO.  He has a blue collar with our name and address and a rabies tag.  He's a very gentle and very sick dog.  If you see him please call...919-868-2639 (Mike) or 919-444-3311 (Kasandra).  Thanks so much and spread the word.  I'll see if I can get a picture on this as well.

I can't figure out how to put an image on this page.  I can email one if you want to email me.

***UPDATE:  It's now 8:30pm.  My husband and I have looked for Copper from 7:30am-7pm with no luck.  We do not think he is still alive, but we would still like to find him.  If anyone sees him laying anywhere PLEASE call.  Thanks!

I am so sorry about your dog. It is heartbreaking to lose a pet. My 11 year old little dog got sick and he went out to potty and never came back. I was told sometimes they just go away from you to die by themselves, Still hurts to think about it. Bless you.

kjmarian,

I am sorry for your pain as well.  We've had to say goodbye to so many of our animals in the past few years, for various reasons.  Thankfully, we've at least had the opportunity to say our goodbye's.  I will keep your Copper in my thoughts and prayers..let us know if you find him.  I missed this post on May 1st...I wish I'd seen it earlier so I could have joined your search.  Your post especially touches me as we have lost two dogs to kidney failure.  God bless and I will take a drive around Chatham tomorrow for him.  We took in a beautiful sweet girl a few years back, who ended up at our doorstep after having been missing in Bear Creek for a week.  She traveled about 20 miles to reach us, thru the woods she came.  The owner didn't want her back and she blessed us with her last year of life (she was dying of heart failure).  Again, let us know if you find him.  All the best.

We have not found Copper.  We have looked since May 1st.  In the 10 years we owned him he has never once run off or been more than eye distance from the house. He was the best dog anyone could ever ask for.  I put up signs on Alston Chapel thinking maybe if someone saw him they might think he was starving instead of just very sick.  He was one of the family and lived the life of a king.  We have had to give him an IV everyday for 13 months since his kidney's started failing.  He got two medicines a day twice a day and a special ritual for his food.  He declined to near death in just one week and it killed us to know we had to put him down.  My 2 year old daughter said she couldn't take a nap today because "she missed Copper."  He was very loved and we are very sad we didn't get to say goodbye.

I'm almost positive Copper couldn't have made it far b/c of his health, but he has literally vanished into thin air.  We have searched and searched  miles around our home.  We believe and so does our vet that he's not far, but probablly crawled up somewhere in a ball and b/c he looks like a deer we just can't see him.  I would still like to find him, but I'm scared to see what state he would be in.  He's got to be in the woods near our house somewhere.  We are just trying to come to grips with the fact we may never know what happened and we just hope that all the years he had a pampered and loved life that he didn't suffer outside 100ft away from home.

Thank you to everyone who has viewed this posting and for your thoughtful comments.  If anything changes I will be sure to update, but I'm losing faith that anyhing will change.

KJ, thank you for being a loving animal owner and giving Copper a good life. I can tell you are a genuine animal lover and I admire you for that. It is hard when you lose one, their lives are way too short.  I enjoyed my Abbey for 18 yrs. and she tried to go off to die alone..sometimes I think it's their tendency, I am not sure why. Maybe to try to spare us some pain in some way in their own thought lines? I don't know...she was an indoor cat and kept wanting to go outdoors...then her last moments arrived...very hard still even tho'
I adopted another great one that needed a loving home.  He's fantastic...they are all special...I hope you find Copper.

Dear KJ,

When our son was 3yrs old. he lost his best friend (who was also 3yrs old.) to kidney failure.  Two months earlier his other dog had passed away (heart disease).  My son is 5 now and even though he has four other dogs today, he still talks very much about his beloved best dog and how very much he misses him.

Your post brings back a lot of memories for me about how difficult that time was, for all of us.  My heart goes out to you and your family, especially your little girl. I will continue to hope that you find Copper.  I can understand how an animal would go off to pass on.  I know that I cried every day when our dog was really beginning to fail, I think sometimes that he felt worse for us (his family) than for himself. I felt like he was telling me, "it's alright, don't be so sad". 'Least that's how it felt.

I wish you all the best during this very difficult time.  Lots of well wishes to your daughter especially.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your dog.  Our dog is rather old, and was rescued from a pet hoarder.  He's got some medical issues, but we love him.  We don't know how long he might last because he has so many issues, but we cherish every day we have with him.

As far as determining where your dog may have gone, many animals instinctively go toward the nearest source of water when sick or near death.  If there is a stream, pond, or water filled gully nearby, that would be the best place to look for him.

I am so sorry about Copper. Pets become such members of the family. I hope your heart heals fast...
