My son got a good laugh out of the post about the gypsies living out on the island in Haw River. Since he is a regular at the swimming hole, I ask him about it. There are no gypsies on the island. There is only "Wolf", a man that chooses to live away from people, out on the island. He keeps the parking area and paths cleaned up, and helps out with anything that needs doing in the area. He lives alone, there is no son named "Bear". There are several people that go out and camp on the island, but are far from gypsies. He said it is true that if you want to visit with Wolf, stand on the bank and howl, he will come across and pick you up, he doesn't mind company.

WOW, Bear might become some legend or novelty of the Haw river folk tales.  Someone give him a harmonica!

Sounds like the legend of Hermit Island from when I was a kid down in Mobile, Alabama. There really was this hermit who lived on an island in the bay; think the real name was Goat Island but people referred to it as Hermit Island because of that guy (or maybe he was an old goat!).  Somehow he had money to put gas in his outboard motor and to come in to town every once in a while to buy groceries. I remember hearing about one of his last trips to town, when his outboard motor was stolen. And not long after that, he came to town and was hit and killed by a speeding taxi.  Seems like he had good reason to distrust civilization.
