Me three. (we actually have multiple junk cars, we truly are from the south)

My husband and I were just discussing what would be the best thing to do with the latest car and if we would have to break it down.  Also thought about donating it as it does run but needs major work.

Bish is located on the Bish Road just off of old 421 between Staley and Siler City.

277 Bish Rd
Siler City, NC 27344
(919) 663-3336

They are open M-F 8-4. You must remove the battery, gas tank and tires from the car. If it has a metal tank it must be empty and it can be put inside the car. You drive in, get weighed, drive to the back and they will use the big claw and lift it right off your trailer and throw it on the pile. If you just have metal they can use their big magnet to get it off for you. After you are unloaded you take your truck/trailer back across the scales and weigh out. You can park across the street and walk back to the office to get your $$$. They take any type of scrap metal, aluminum cans etc. This is where all of the people that empty the metal bins take their scrap.

I tried to part the old car out but it was easier just to get rid of the thing. Besides, I needed to free up my trailer.

not sure how true it is, may be some type of urban myth or may be specific ones that are valuable, but I've heard that something in the catalytic converters is in high demand, so if you do have a junk car and are considering taking it to Bish or someplace similar you may want to remove the catalytic converter and sell it seperately.

It's the platinum in them.

Just had one replaced. The cost was close to $3000. Fortunately, it was still under warranty and the manufacturer had issued a recall.

My husband says we can't get more than about 8 cents a lb. for the car.

Which translates to less than $300.00?

I think we'll donate it and take the tax write off.

The one I got rid of was an old Chatham County Sheriff's car I bought at the surplus sale. I used the engine and transmission and had no use for the rest of the thing. The car was big and heavy so it was worth the 8 cents a pound just to get rid of it.

Mercy, hope my cat convert holds up!  What is the typical warranty period on such...in case I am riding in a ticking ($) time bomb?

The converter should last the life of the car. Emissions are designed to compensate for poor maintenance. A 1972 automobile can run very clean if it is tuned and adjusted properly. In 1975 catalytic converters were installed on cars. The early ones failed because of engines running rich and becoming plugged up. The converters job is to reduce hydrocarbons. When an engine is running poorly the unburned fuel is burned in the converter and the some of the gases are recycled back into the engine while the remainder is discharged out the exhaust.

Newer cars adjust the mixture, timing etc automatically now so the converter is not under the stress it once was.

Same guard at Crutchfields was thowing metal in the back of their truck today, it was very full. To me it seems like a conflict of interest to be a guard and a metal scavenger.

I am beginning to wonder if the county isn't losing some badly needed revenue in respect to the operation costs of the centers.  Just read recently that another $10 increase (to $91) for center use had occurred. The bins were once brimming full and now empty or people diving in, and the county isn't getting any money in return on it.  Don't have a clue how much a diver permit is, not going to dive! But I'd guess a permit is nominal in exchange for the haul I have seen some take out.
