I was sooo excited to see that we can now recycle all plastics 1 through 7 at Cole Park's collection center....and you don't even have to sort them!!!

I'm not sure what other collection locations have upgraded.

Way to go, waste management!

Holy guacamole!!! Hooray! Hooray!

Just 2 weeks ago my Daughter and I were dropping off trash and recycling and some "Official" we'd never seen there before chastised us for trying to recycle any plastic but the #1 stuff.  As a matter of fact, we thought he was rude and hauty about it all.  He followed us from bin to bin as we were criminals!  I was all set to bring all my recycling to work here in Chapel Hill!

Thanks goodness they finally saw the light in Chatham!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!

I know what you mean Becky, most those folks at recycling centers are really nice, but I also have experienced a overzealous official that would follow you around like you were a suspect of a crime just waiting to leap and pounce on there prey.

and on the other side of the coin, i recently saw one of the employees casually talking to an older fellow as the patron emptied a large trash can of aluminum beer cans into one of the trash bins.  he could've easily taken the cans across the center to the aluminum bin but instead dumped them into the trash to go to the landfill.  and the recycling center employee just kept chatting away.

it is good news that they have simplified the plastic recycling.

Dang, don't they still get money for aluminum cans when you turn them in.  But I see what your saying.

Yeah, I've seen stuff like that too.  The guy who was so very rude to us was not a regular employee at that site.  His shirt even indicated he was in management I believe.  I have also seen the regular employees with a grabber gizmo taking recycleables out of the trash and putting it where it belongs.  Guess it depends on how motivated they feel.  I can only imagine how boring their job really is.

I have to wonder about the people hanging out of the metals bin by their toenails and if it is THAT valuable, why is the county not scoring that vs, dumpster divers and therefore helping in offsetting the costs for the centers?  Time to revisit the diving permits?  Blek to begin with Cheesy

That's interestng Belle.  I know the dump/recycle centers in Orange County that I have visited have only 1 attendent.  Those centers are about the same size, actually bigger I think.  They also have huge dumpsters rather than 2 compacters like the one at Cole Park.  I haven't been to others in Chatham.  Wonder if 2 employees on site every day plus the compacter cost is part of the not making enough revenue problem?

Also, do the other centers get a lot of recycling?   If not, then the sales to the recyclers would be low thus reducing profits.  When my Daughter lived near Bear Creek she felt as if she was one of a very few that actually recycled anything!  She even had to teach her room mates how and what to recycle.  As she likes to say, "Where's Captain Planet when you need him?"

Today, after reading this thread I called Pittsboro collection center, and was told accepting plastics 1-7 was an 'experimental program' only being done at Cole Park. So, let's support the 'experiment' (so the others will hopefully come online for this)!!

Hey Tbone, Thanks for making that call!  I have a bin that will be overflowing* with plastics by the time I drive by the site on my way to work Tuesday.  Heck until that guy told us we couldn't we had already been taking 1-7 plastics there!  Hope the experiment works.

*That's when we take our bins, usually when ALL our bins (newspaper, plastic, aluminum cans, and trash) are full.  So we end up going every 2-3 weeks.  Takes longer to fill our steel can and glass bins.

It BURNS me up to see people that don't attempt to recycle at all...but can't SAY anything while there, but I do
GLARE! Grin Most of the centers seem to have only one employee on board, sometimes I hit P'boro if other biz there (combining gas $) and I have combined missions to other site locations and usually only one attendant, but I know Cole Park is the busiest because of the population.
I'd NEVER want to go back to the dumpsters along the roadsides which were HORRID, NASTY, HEALTH HAZARD

Yeh!

Great news.

On a sadder note, the elderly gentlemen who worked there for years passed away.  He was always so friendly and helpful.  I spoke with him often and know he served in WW2 and was in the Pacific with MacAurther,  so he was not young.  Sorry to say, I can't remember his name.

Those cats up there are always smiling and friendly no matter the weather or whatever.  Please remember them at Christmas time or throughout the year.
They are a part of the community also.

I love those guys at Cole Park.  Sorry to hear of one's passing.  Was it very recent?

Within the last month.

He was tall and had a deep accent and laughed a lot.

The last few times I've been there have been guys there I don't recognize and they have been very questioning.

The metal bin at the Crutchfields Center is always empty. I have seen the guard's personal trucks loaded with the scrap. Scrap metal dealers like Bish pay are paying alot these days. Depending on the metal $180 a ton is not unheard of.
