My son is attending the NOLS program in Wyoming this summer.  They asked for a photograph with his application.  It's a national program and there's no discrimination there.  Does anyone know of anyone turned away from joining the P'boro pool because of race?

um, yes. I believe that is what we have all been saying since the topic came up. If it was only a rumor I'd heard through the grapevine I wouldn't have mentioned it.

I distinctly remember an middle eastern family being denied in the mid 90s.

About the photo.

This was with the APPLICATION, not after being accepted.  I can understand once you are a member if they wanted one for the file but BEFORE is still a bit fishy to me.

Girl from PBO,
Do you know of something racial that recently happened at the PBO pool?  I'm just wondering.  It seems as tho you know alot about the pool.  And when you say recent is that this year, or 5 years, or 20 years ago....again I'm just curious?

Thanks

I haven't had any association with the Pittsboro pool in many years, so I have no idea if things there have changed or not.  I believe I already stated that (although maybe it was a different thread in which the Pittsboro pool came up.)

When I say "recent" I mean not the 1960's when the whole world was segregated and it was sort of an understandable thing but rather the 1990's when most people had figured out better and segregation was against the law.

It is a fact that the Pittsboro pool did not accept racial minorities in the relatively recent past.  Anyone who denies that is either trying to cover it up or just ignorant of the history there.

My name is Kim Canale.  I've been a member of the pool for 7-8 years.  I never sent in a picture.  I've also been on the pool board for 4 years now.  I have been around to Chatham Forest, and also to the Willow Springs subdivision leaving flyers for the pool in hopes of getting new members.  And, I'm here to tell you that the pool has changed....just like one of the previous posts mentioned.

And I'm also NOT here to deny what the pool did.  They did deny people because of race.  But eighteen years ago, they also denied white people..a white family-2 adults and 3 kids.  I know this because they are my friends parents.  Plus, within the past maybe 9 years they also denied a white male.  However, in the past 4 years we have accepted 1 black family, and 1 single black lady.

So, you are right.  The pool has a history, just as all of us do.

And we could also go on and on about who you know or I know that was denied membership at the pool or about how things were handled or rather covered up.  However, I think it's more important that we're not that way anymore.

If anyone is interested in joining the pool, please feel free to email me at krcanale@yahoo.com.  This year, it's $500.00 to join, each year after that it's $350.00.  If you'd like to try us out before you join, just shoot me an email because I have to let the lifeguards know that you're coming, and not to charge you.

Thanks for the first-hand report of current pool conditions.  Its nice to hear that the policies are a little more up-to-date.

It is on the outskirts of Chapel Hill.... go up to Star Point and make a left, then another left pretty shortly into the neighborhood and the pool is back there.
