I am curious and asked the County Commissioners at last week's meeting. Who is evaluating our 150K investment with the new EDC? What the heck are they doing?!

I have been told that teenagers in our county can't get summer jobs even because the PP folks are swooping those up now.

What is the EDC doing? Who is calling on their accountability for the lack of economic progress in our County?

I liken this to the situation with the hire of Dr Hart. The huge financial investment in her - like she was going to save our schools. They gave her a generous bonus and she immediately spent a boatload of money on those "Strategic Planning Meetings" she roped a bunch of us in th community to go to - with ZERO results. Not to mention the money she spent to renovate her office to look like a lawyers office, complete with receptionist and all. The BOE was prepared to show her her performance evaluation when she saw the writing on the wall - she didn't deliver and she quickly bailed.

SO....we make a similar huge investment in this new EDC Director. Will we be faced with a similar situation? When our County has hit rock bottom, who's going to call her on the carpet?

Just curious....

I find it funny that you're worried about them spending money but the administration of your avatar GW Bush has spent trillions like a drunken sailor.

I do not understand what this thread has to do with Bush and his administration, it was a Chatham specific question about the EDC?

Linda likes to try and change the subject or use "look over here" type of responses when she does not have a good answer.

Linda had her rear end handed to her on a paper plate in the PBO elections and has a hard time getting over it.

The point is that Heather's avatar is Bush.  She is calling for fiscal responsibility, yet supports an administration which has pissed away trillions.  That disconnect is very bizarre to me.

As for the EDC, by all means, hold them accountable.

the county and State elections have and always have had more to do with our day-to-day lives. yes, holding Shrub up as an avatar is... questionable. he's not even running this time, PTL.

As far as I'm concerned it doesn't matter what prez Chathambooks supports.  I'm
certainly NOT a Bush fan, but that is beside the point.  Both Linda and Chathambooks
agree - the EDC should be held accountable.  Now is this being done?
150K is a good deal of money - I hope the BOC has the sense to ensure that
it is being well spent.

The Nation - Think the Economy Is Bad? Wait Till the States Cut Back - NYTimes.com

It is not just Chatham County that is suffering in regard to jobs. If their is any merit to this take, it is going to get worse, before it gets better and not due to local decision processes necessarily.
I had a client today, that had to cut back on their planned services by our company, as she explained that her son (in Atlanta) had been laid off from his (nice paying job, he was fairly young, job of only 5 years post college graduation, first house) and THOUGHT he had a good shot to transition to a job with the city of Atlanta, until they abolished over 400 jobs. They were having to send him money, so he could try to keep up his job hunt, go to interviews and pay his mortgage. Trickle down hit them and my company as a result!

I agree that times are tough everywhere but that is not the point of this post.
Can someone point me to where I can read about the responsibilities of the edc?

Try www.perfectjobsaccordingtousornothing.coalitionmandates.chatham.com

PS.  The Chatham part is very important or you will end up with Orange County info.

Not defending or naysaying the EDC.  Just do realize that it is just not a LOCAL battle. Many factors outside of the county or state are weighing in. But, the county does need to scrutinize what bang it will get for the bucks.
Tough timing and times in that regard yes, late in the game...if it doesn't pan out...then...JMO.

It's true times are tough everywhere.  That makes each tax dollar spent more
important IMO.  This applies not only to the EDC, but to every county department.

I'ts interesting to me that while the city of Atlanta is cutting 400 jobs our
county wants to raise the salaries of employees.  Oh and of course they
want to raise property taxes as well.

I personally can't take any more of that. paying taxes this year meant serious study of available funds. and I am past my busy earning years. my kid is grown and cared for, but my income is strictly limited.
